VENTURA (CBSLA) A Ventura middle school history teacher has come under scrutiny for political comments in the classroom that were recorded by a student, and at least one parents doesnt think the school has taken appropriate action.
People need to wake up and see the government has way too much power right now, the teacher can be heard saying on the recording.
For Sarah Silikula, the parent of the eighth grader who recorded the comments, it was a lesson she wasnt expecting her son to hear.
Silikuas told her son that if he was ever uncomfortable with what was being said to pull out his phone and start videotaping it, which is exactly what the eighth grader did when his history teacher went on a political rant in class.
Hunter Biden, for example, is doing deals with China and Ukraine where he was funneling money illegally. He also had child pornography on his laptop. He was having sexual intercourse with his own niece, the teacher was heard saying.
I mean, why? Why does that need to be said in this classroom full of children, Silikula asked.
The incident occurred two weeks ago at Anacapa Middle School. Silikula said she alerted the school immediately becuase her son came home very confused.
And he got in the car and he was very upset. He announced, Im never getting vaccinated. Im never getting anymore shots of any kind. Did you know Trumps still president?' Silikula said.
when he first got in the car and said, Dad, teachers know everything. Shes right, dad. Youre wrong. Hes damaged. Hes hurt. Hes scared. He doesnt trust his parents now. He thinks we lied to him, Silikula said of her son.
The superintendent told Silikula that her sons entire class was moved to another teacher, but she said its not enough. She wants to make sure the lesson learned was that a teachers opinion should never be taught in the classroom.

(2,403 posts)I know for a fact that there were widespread conversations of this ilk in the classroom while Trump was president.
So what can be done about it or should anything be done about it? How about comments about past political issues?
I do not like what this teacher was pushing but HOW we go about dealing with it IS important.

(4,429 posts)My daughter went to a very liberal HS and so, this wouldn't happen. But teachers regularly transgressed boundaries that *I* would not have done as a clinician.
Boundaries are important between teachers and students as well.

(11,646 posts)Some of them suck at their jobs and some of them say inappropriate shit. Here we have an insecure person who seeks validation for their right wing conspiracy theories through a captive audience of 12 year olds... how else can that be handled other than on a case by case basis? The good news here is that just like with racist and authoritarian cops who overstep, in the era of cell phones and social media such behavior will likely catch up with you eventually whereas before it would only result in he said she said and the kids words would be dismissed.

(2,343 posts)keep their own damned politics to themselves. No place for this in the classroom.

(35,378 posts)remember having racist discussions in class. We had over 200 kids in grades 1-8 that were 100% white. I never met a black kid until I was in high school and there was just a few there. Congressman Wayne L. Hayes (D) came to speak at our school, he told this joke about these white guys in Georgia taking a black guy water skiing trolling for alligators. I am sure he would be a Republican if he was alive today. That was the 50s and 60s in eastern Ohio and really there has been little change. Back in those days this area was solid Democrat but with the Civil Rights Bill and the demise of union jobs it is solid Republican today.
