Train Hits Pedestrian Today

I substituted math in a small town about a dozen miles southwest of us.
On the way home, I saw an Amtrak stopped between small towns, with passengers off taking a mask break.
A mile up or so, a freight train is stopped and at every crossing there are ESDA cars on each side of the tracks and a local, county or state cop.
I find out that the crossing just south of the main intersection in that town was the site of a person getting hit by a train.
It was, as one would expect, a fatal event.
The Patch website has a short piece, but the coroner hadn't arrived yet and train crew interviews were ongoing. Jo further details.
The tracks through there have 12' tall fences on both sides of the track as part of the high speed rail upgrades a few years ago.
When something like this happens, I always think of the train driver.
If that driver did nothing wrong, they'll live with having killed someone with no control over the circumstances.
We had a neighbor commit suicide by throwing himself in front of a train, in the dark. Zero the train driver could have done.
I think that's when I started wondering about the psyche of the driver.

In that suicide case, they didn't even find the body until 7 hours later. The train was in northern Kentucky by then.
Had to come all the way back for hearings & interviews, I'm sure.
And, I'm familiar with that site.
There would literally be no way to see someone laying on the tracks in the dark. Just out of a curve with high ground to the inside of the curve. Pitch black there.
I KNOW that driver made not the slightest error, yet he ran over someone with a 15,000 ton train. Tough thing to deal with.

Coroner's Office is reporting the victim was 82 years old.
I'm starting to wonder if this wasn't a bike rider, because that intersection would be on odd place to be walking.

There's a state highway on each side of the tracks, and to the east is a low traffic street that I can see being a bike path.

Something just seems odd about this tragedy.
