70 year old man that was a QC Lab supervisor at the company's facility here in Illinois.
He worked until he was 66, so he retired the year before I did.
His grandson stabbed him to death in front of sheriff's deputies. The grandson was shot several times & died at the scene, but his grandfather (my buddy) had been stabbed twice in the neck. They couldn't save him at the hospital.
RIP, El!
Edited for newest info:
The 911 call was made by the killer's brother, another grandson.
When the police thought they had him calmed down, he swiped the knife at his brother, when cops moved to get the brother out of the way, the guy lunged at his grandfather and stabbed him.
Can't tell from the description if the swipe at his brother was a diversion or if the guy was just completely out of control, going after anybody around.

(3,315 posts)Always the grandson. Always stabbing. Usually the grandparents had been instrumental in raising the boy. I don't know what causes this, but at least in my experience, it's not unknown.

(65,168 posts)911 call was about a domestic disturbance.
Deputies showed, were let in & tried to calm the grandson down.
As he appeared to be stepping in off the ledge, he lunged at his grandfather and stabbed him in the neck. Cops shot, he was hit but stabbed at least 3 more times before cops killed him. One of those 3 was a second hit to the neck.
There's no more public information about what triggered all this.
This just happened at 4pm yesterday.

(36,133 posts)I'm sure there's so much more behind this, but imagine the family's trauma in losing two of its loved ones in such a scary way.
You've suffered the loss of someone who you knew professionally -- a relationship even families don't understand.
Please take care.
