Late last year, and early this year, the Trump mob tried to pull of a coup d'etat. (They tried to steal America.) It ain't that deep.
The congressional committee investigating it is moving forward as quickly as they can. But the wheels of government/justice turn slowly. Meanwhile, the Republican Party is doing everything possible to slow down the investigation until next year, when they hope to take over the House and even the Senate, and bring an end to any accountability for those who tried to steal our country.
If the Justice Dept. under Merrick Garland, is doing anything to bring people to justice in this case, it sure as hell isn't apparent. But, for the moment, let's give them the benefit of the doubt that they will accomplish something resembling justice while they still hold power.
Put in simple terms, Democrats are trying to reveal the truth of the attempted coup. Republicans are trying to run out the clock.
Sad to say that, when it comes to this type of Washington DC game, Republicans always seem to come out on top. All I can add to that is: Tick Tock, Tick Tock.

(94,600 posts)What is the acceptable time period to evaluate something as important as an insurrection?

(21,360 posts)James Comey got in a lot of trouble when he announced investigations into Hillary's emails right before the election.
I believe there are norms that DOJ is supposed to follow regarding influencing the outcome of an election.

(33,345 posts)That is 9 months from now, but the subpoenas can easily be delayed that long by court procedure. There have been no fireworks public hearing, no new revelations.
Frustration at the pace is only natural.

(15,234 posts)Most legal experts I've listened to, for example, consider Bannon's subpoena a pretty open-and-shut case. Not only is his executive privilege claim pathetic, but, at the very least, Bannon should have to show up in person to Congress and make his case to the 1/6 committee. There is absolutely no legal ground for him to completely blow them off.
And yet time slips by and nothing happens. How many people consulting how many legal resources for how many hours do you think it should take to come to what's widely seen to be an obvious conclusion? The slowness of the process seems a whole lot more like avoidance and timidity than meticulous attention to detail.
It's very important that Congress's investigative powers and oversight authority don't become (or should I say "remain"?) paper tigers, with no more weight that a "strongly worded letter". This is where the importance of an issue makes it require swiftness, not endless delay.
Investigation of the insurrection, of course, is more detailed and complicated than just Bannon's contempt of Congress charge. But again, it's not my mere personal opinion, but that of plenty of legal experts, that what we're seeing is foot-dragging and cowardice after nine months with precious little to show for it other than very low-level street thug prosecutions.

I may be idealistic, but I feel certain that Garland and the DOJ, being fully aware of the timing and the need to proceed in a way that will withstand court appeals, will be issuing indictments.

(9,998 posts)I predicted long ago that NOTHING would happen to these criminals. That this whole thing would be a dog and pony show.
I couldn't care less if I'm right about my prediction. Seeing some accountability would give me a glimmer of hope that all was not completely lost in this country.
But so far, it's Fitzmas ALL OVER AGAIN. It's the Mueller Report ALL OVER AGAIN!
Except this time, I'm not going to be Charlie Brown with the football. This time, I knew the ending before the 5 minute mark of the movie. And the ending SUCKS.
