I'm puzzled about this oil policy proposal

Biden Shutting Down Line 5 Pipeline Could Send Gas Prices Surging.
...
Line 5 pipeline could be under threat due to the White House exploring the potential impact of closing it on fuel prices in the region, according to a recent Politico report, amid a drive to reduce the U.S.'s dependence on fossil fuels.

I don't understand why it is a good idea to ask OPEC to increase production to hold fuel prices down but it's a bad idea to protect oil supply line from Canada.

legacy internal combustion equipment will be prohibitively expensive to run. That would likely propel development and implementation of alternatively fueled power equipment.

The problem is that in general, people and businesses don't have the stomach for it and the policy probably won't stick. For a policy like that to sustain through future administrations isn't realistic. In my opinion, until a system that provides a reliable, affordable commercial and commuter replacement / alternative is available people won't buy in.

I know nothing about this site. I did a google search for pipeline 5 spills.

ETA:
The pipelines in the Straits of Mackinac cross one of the most ecologically sensitive areas in the world. The Great Lakes are home to 21 percent of the world's fresh surface water. The pristine Straits area supports bountiful fisheries, provides drinking water to thousands of people, and anchors a thriving tourism industry with historic and beautiful Mackinac Island right in the center of it all. This area is the definition of Pure Michigan
