Pennsylvania Governor Responds to Trump on the 2020 Election - letter to the WSJ

As governor of Pennsylvania, I am disappointed the Journal would publish former President Donald Trump’s irrational array of discredited lies about the November 2020 election in our commonwealth (Letters, Oct. 28.) Pennsylvania had a free, fair and secure election. Claims of voter fraud and rigged elections are completely false and have been repeatedly debunked by fact checkers and dismissed by dozens of state and federal judges as well as Trump administration officials, most notably former Attorney General Bill Barr.

The inaccuracies in the former president’s letter are too numerous and basic to rebut point by point, but one especially blatant one stands out. Mr. Trump argues that over 50,000 votes were cast in Pennsylvania by voters who should have been legally prohibited from voting, either because they do not exist on the voter rolls or were registered after Pennsylvania’s voter registration deadline.

If true, these claims would have been easy to prove simply by comparing the publicly available list of votes cast to the registration list. And yet, in voluminous legal filings by Mr. Trump and his allies—under oath and at risk of perjury for false statement—no evidence to support any of these claims was ever presented. Nor has any such evidence been presented at extensive hearings conducted by Republican leaders of the Pennsylvania Legislature in the year since the election.

All Americans can have confidence that Pennsylvania carried out the 2020 election with fairness and accuracy. The voters had their say and our nation is moving forward. Continuing to repeat the big lie reeks of desperation and should be rejected for the good of our nation.

Gov. Tom Wolf (D., Pa.), Harrisburg, Pa.

Just because someone sent in a demented screed, there's no obligation on the part of the Journal to publish it. But from now until the end of time, the former guy can brag that all his baseless complaints were printed in the Wall Street Journal, and that will be just factual enough for a lot of people in the popular media to repeat it to their audiences.

Can't believe they would stoop that low to print his inane ramblings. I guess the WSJ is an enabler. Anyone that gives the lunatic the time of day or a forum for his nonsense just enables him to continue his blatherings.

Georgia Certifies: Donald Trump Lost - WSJ Editorial Nov 21

Republicans have given Mr. Trump ample leeway to prove his case for ballot fraud, and we’ve approached his claims with an open mind. But if there’s no evidence beyond general innuendo, the President’s charges of a stolen election will undermine public faith in the electoral system. That won’t serve the country, his party, or his supporters, who will sour on politics and in the process cede elections to the left. None of this will serve Mr. Trump, his legacy, or whatever hope he has to run again in 2024.

Trump vs. a GOP Senate - WSJ editorial - Dec. 23

Trump is leaving office as he entered, with a whirlwind of action that gets more attention than it accomplishes. He may also take down his party’s chances of winning the Senate runoffs on Jan. 5. Does he care?

The Election Rejectionists - WSJ Editorial (written before the infamous phone call), Jan 4

The leading culprit here is Mr. Trump, who as always refuses to accept responsibility for defeat. Recall that he also claimed the Iowa caucus result was stolen in 2016 when he lost to Ted Cruz. He’s now spinning conspiracy theories and election falsehoods daily on Twitter. He doesn’t seem to care what damage he does in promoting the myth of his victory.

In our view this week’s exercise is also unconstitutional. The text of the original charter, elaborated by the 12th Amendment, gives state legislatures the power to appoint electors. The Vice President is charged to open the votes to be counted—nothing more.

The Disgrace on Capitol Hill - WSJ Editorial Jan 6

Mr. Trump’s refusal to accept his loss, and the false hope he gives to his supporters, is validating the worst things his critics have said about him. He is being enabled by Rudy Giuliani and Peter Navarro, but also by people like Mr. Cruz and Sen. Josh Hawley, who surely know better.. The proper response now is for all Republicans to drop their objections to the state electors and ratify them—and Joe Biden’s election—by acclamation. Mr. Biden will become President at noon on Jan. 20, and until then the police need to restore order with as much force as necessary. Republicans especially need to speak against trespass and violence. As for Mr. Trump, to steal some famous words deployed in 1940 against Neville Chamberlain : “In the name of God, go.”

The Trump Impeachment Evidence - WSJ Editorial, Feb 11

Yet there’s no defense for Mr. Trump’s conduct on Jan. 6 and before. Mitch McConnell is reportedly telling his GOP colleagues that the decision to convict or acquit is a vote of conscience, and that’s appropriate. After the Electoral College voted on Dec. 14, Mr. Trump could have conceded defeat and touted his accomplishments. Now his legacy will be forever stained by this violence, and by his betrayal of his supporters in refusing to tell them the truth. Whatever the result of the impeachment trial, Republicans should remember the betrayal if Mr. Trump decides to run again in 2024.

Trump's Non-Vindication - WSJ Editorial Feb 15

But none of that absolves Mr. Trump for refusing for hours to ask his supporters to stand down. Mr. Trump’s Jan. 6 early-afternoon comments to House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy dismissing a plea to call off the rioters, as related second-hand by GOP Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, are further evidence of Mr. Trump’s dereliction. As Mr. McConnell also noted, Senate acquittal does not absolve Mr. Trump of potential criminal or civil liability for actions he took in office.

Trump Lost to Himself - WSJ Editorial. Feb 18

Mr. Trump had many accomplishments to tout, and voters recognized them. But Mr. Biden’s consistent campaign message of a return to a calmer, more unifying politics resonated with millions of voters who had tired of the constant Trump turmoil. Mr. Trump didn’t lose to Joe Biden. He lost to himself.

In Donald Trump's Purgatory - WSJ Editorial May 13

But the GOP problem is less that Ms. Cheney won’t let Mr. Trump go than that Mr. Trump won’t let 2020 go. He can’t accept that he lost, so he’s busy rewriting history to convince everyone he was cheated. He’s making that claim a litmus test for GOP leaders or for candidates who want his endorsement. That may please the Trump base but it won’t appeal to the swing voters the GOP needs to retake the House and Senate. Mr. Trump’s claim that he was cheated in November is the main reason the GOP lost two Georgia Senate seats in the Jan. 5 runoff. Trump voters stayed home after Mr. Trump told them their votes didn’t count. The pre-election polling and voter turnout couldn’t be clearer about this.

Yes, Trump Really Did Lose Michigan - WSJ Editorial,July 5

Mr. Trump’s response was predictable. He called the inquiry “a cover up,” while repeating the same nonsense about Detroit and Antrim County. Apparently Mr. Trump didn’t actually read the report, but other Republicans should give it a look.

Trump Loses Arizona--Again - WSJ Editorial Sept 25

The GOP should quit chasing him down rabbit holes. Mr. Trump lost last year by 74 electoral votes, so even flipping Arizona would have left him two states short. He can’t admit to his fans that he lost, since it would undermine his rally attendance, fundraising and teasers about 2024. Perhaps Mr. Trump can’t even admit to himself that he lost, and in his final days he’ll be raging on the heath about “ballot dumps.”

Donald Trump's Hostage Politics - WSJ Editorial Oct 15

Now the former President is threatening aloud that he might repeat this act of electoral sabotage in the next national elections. “If we don’t solve the Presidential Election Fraud of 2020 (which we have thoroughly and conclusively documented),” Mr. Trump said in a statement Wednesday, “Republicans will not be voting in ‘22 or ‘24. It is the single most important thing for Republicans to do.”
