Let people get their information from trained medical professionals, and base their decisions on that.
Yeah, that means you Matthew McConaughey.

(206,247 posts)This sends me over the edge, too! On the news today, I heard some sports figure pontificating that the vaccine affects fertility! WTF?! And I heard the same thing from an older gentleman who I used to see at meetings. He said that his granddaughters won't get the vaccine in case they want to have children someday!

(153,212 posts)a neighbor of mine claims "we don't know what's in it"......I pointed out to her that she had flown to California to visit family, without knowing jack squat about the pilot's qualifications - she said to me, well I don't know that information, but SOMEONE DOES.....omfg, the logical disconnect is just mind boggling

(206,247 posts)Did we know what was in the polio vaccine or the smallpox or now the MMR, vaccines that were required in order to attend school?? I can even remember getting vaccines a couple of times as a kid in school, all the kids did. It's not like they don't conduct exhaustive trials - and we were extremely fortunate to have gotten this one as soon as we did... *sigh*

(206,247 posts)I've had them, too - let alone those who are active military, yet we've never heard a peep about that.

(6,625 posts)I have a friend who served in both the Marine Corps and the Air Force (not at the same time, of course). He said that while active, he was stuck with so many needles he couldn't even keep count, and he wonders WTF is up with all the squawking about vaccine mandates in the military now.

(4,406 posts)Some people are too scared of doctors or don't understand medical advice but trust their family or priest or friends.
New Zealand is closing in on a 90% national vaccination rate because of campaigns to go out and talk to hard to reach communities. For example, the government paid to produce a video of gang leaders explaining to their people why they chose to get vaccinated:
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/watch-gang-leaders-urge-whanau-to-get-vaccinated-willie-jacksons-idea/N2ECWEW4XMUSPFZTPRCECW3JZ4/
They've also done work with the Prostitutes Collective and other social outreach organisations that work with marginalised communities.
So yeah, I think celebrities should be giving advice about COVID vaccines as long as its scientifically and medically sound advice. And the government could be doing more to get across the messaging to people from communities members that they trust.

(61,714 posts)I'll turn the question around. Why aren't supposed leaders in communities - church leaders, police chiefs, mayors, whatever groups people perceive as their leaders - doing more to encourage communities to pull together and get through this pandemic?
