I check it every day. Usually around 3200 new cases each day with around 30 - 35 deaths. It's been pretty steady for the past two months or so.

I expected a spike with the colder weather, but the weather really hasn't been that bad so far. I guess there's still plenty of time for it to head upward, unfortunately.

with no dates, you'd immediately be able to point to the date the majority of the school districts here implemented mask mandates and when they lifted them a couple of weeks ago.

Could be coincidence, but it matches perfectly.

Minnesota and Wisconsin area. Is the colder weather pushing numbers up? Europe is being devastated by a new wave of Covid and it could happen here again, in fact it probably will but not to as much an extent as past waves since more people are vaxxed. Europe hasn't been vaxxing as many people. Russia...the same.

The CDC has an extensive list of people who qualify for boosters. It turns out I am on that list so in 1 month I will be getting mine.

I helped out in the cafeteria line of the grade and middle school when my grandson was a student there. I would wipe down the metal tray line after each class went through . Omg, the kindergarten through 5 kids were like the green cartoon slime monsters in the Ghost Buster movie. Their hands went from their noses to touching everything in sight. The tray lines after each class came through were sticky and smeared with a variety of unknown goo. I wiped down with bleach water after each one. The teachers were and volunteers were constantly catching colds.

The first 10 years were one cold after another, and then - gradually - my immune system caught on to the various rhinoviruses, and I am damn near cold-proof.

Between the 32 vaccinations I got in the Marines, the Moderna shots and booster, and the antibodies from teaching, I should be virus-proof.

BUT. I am masking and avoiding people and washing hands and keeping my hands away from my face. I'm an old fart, and we can't take chances.

(it's the season - and many charities are hurting having given them up (or converted to scaled back for the last 2 years).

I've gone to two in the last 3 weeks. At the first, I was the only one who kept my mask on. At the second there were a few more - but not many. Both involved lots of eating, and lots of people packed into a room. Theoretically social distancing was going on - but only theoretically.

On the bright side - my doctor's office (which told me I didn't need to wear a mask back in June) has signs up all over the place requiring masks regardless of vaccination status.

Thu Nov 11, 2021, 01:40 AM
Nov 2021

They don’t want me getting the booster if my immune system is too low. They’re running labs tomorrow. Unfortunately, my FIL passed away tonight (Alzheimer’s) so we will be heading into the valley of the unmasked and unvaxed in FL (includes hubby’s family) at some point in the near future. I don’t want to get sick since I start radiation soon, but I want to see our family, and I feel guilty, but want desperately to do something I enjoy on my break between chemo and rads. Haven’t seen the family for 2 yrs.

I was able to get away with just surgery (so my current cancer docs strongly encouraged me to get vaccinated).

It should be just the chemo that lowers immune system, right? (I've had radiation for a prior cancer, but not chemo).

As hard as it is - I'd be tempted to play it safe until I could get the booster. Lower immune system + potentially fewer antibodies from the original vax + great unmasked and unvaxed doesn't seem like the safest bet.

People are inside more, schools are in session. At this point, not a lot we can do, just have to let the vaccine mandate play out and hopefully that gets us to a high enough number that it's just not a huge problem eventually.

Life is pretty much back to normal everywhere.

...

The question now is whether above-average vaccination coverage and continued mitigation measures in states such as New Hampshire, Minnesota, Vermont, Illinois, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Colorado — the seven states that have seen the largest increases in COVID cases during the past two weeks —

...

Similar spikes started earlier this fall in European countries with corresponding vaccination rates — another worrisome sign for the U.S.

...

Several factors are driving the sharp increase in cases, health officials say: colder weather forcing people indoors, sometimes without masks; the hypercontagious Delta variant, which can cause breakthrough cases; and waning protection against infection for those who got vaccinated early, especially seniors.

(Even so-called natural immunity doesn’t guarantee protection. According to a new study, unvaccinated people who had a recent infection were five times more likely to be reinfected than those who were fully vaccinated and didn’t have a prior infection.)
