(11,564 posts)My father flew Spitfires in WW2, then returned to Canada and declined the offer of a commercial pilot's license. He settled into a completely normal, middle-class life...except for each summer, during which he used his vacation time to meet the requirements of his RCAF Reserve status.
Today, I remember him being gone on each and every November 11, long before I got up for the day. Each time, he had put on his uniform and gone to the ceremony known as Dawn Patrol. Standing in the rain, or the darkness or the cold to salute his fallen comrades in arms at the cenotaph in Victory Square.
He never, ever thought of himself as a hero. because he was typical of his generation. "It needed doing. I helped."
