TikTok promotes child marriage to teen accounts

TikTok promotes child marriage to teen accounts — highlighting holes in US law that allow foreigners to bring in child brides

On Monday, news reports heralded the social media app TikTok for aiding the rescue of a kidnapped North Carolina teen. The teen signaled to a passing car using a hand signal she learned from the app, and a driver caught on and notified police.

The story shows the power TikTok can have in young Americans' lives, and what the platform can teach them.

TikTok has another side, however, where videos suggest children surrender their freedoms. A Raw Story investigation found the app is rife with videos promoting child marriage, arranged marriage and multiple wives. TikTok also played videos encouraging abusive relationships. One video claimed that girls who reach their first menstrual cycle are adults capable of mature decision making and getting married to an adult man.

*snip*

TikTok recommended clips celebrating underage marriage to an account Raw Story set up as if it were 13 years old. One displayed a montage of an Islamic marriage contract celebration. "Getting my marriage contract done at 16," read text across the young TikTok user's face. Another read, "Getting my marriage contract at 17." A third video enumerated reasons young girls should consider a marriage with multiple wives. Some clips garnered over twenty thousand likes.

TikTok is worse that Facebook or Twitter. They definitely should be investigated. Frustratedlady Nov 2021 #2

Not only have students from one of our new junior high schools followed their suggestions of pulling soap dispensers or whatever else from bathroom walls, but one upcoming suggestion for December, I think, is Deck the halls/show your balls, or some such.

One of my family members teaches in that school and listed off what the school had learned was on their "calendar". I can't recall all of them, but they were shocking and totally uncalled for.
