A trio of congressional lawmakers are looking to resuscitate legislation that would give financial benefits to descendants and spouses of Black veterans who fought in World War II that were excluded from aid outlined in the original GI Bill.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), a Marine veteran who served four tours in Iraq and author of the proposal, introduced it to the House last week with House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.).
Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) is scheduled to introduce the legislation in the Senate on Thursday.
"We all know the GI Bill lifted up a generation of WWII veterans and built the American century," Moulton said in a statement.
"Most Americans," Moulton added, "don't know that many Black veterans were left out: denied benefits, denied homes, denied the generational wealth that comes from going to college. We can never fully repay those American heroes. But we can fix this going forward for their families."

(19,066 posts)I don't think some people realize how impactful these benefits were.
My own story would not be the same without WWII GI benefits that my grandpa took advantage of. He fought in WWII and came home and was able to buy a house that he raised my father in, when he passed, we took over the house from my grandma. Because my parents had a paid for house, they were able to give us a more stable life, and they were able to keep my grandma in an apartment across the street where she was independent until just before her death. We didn't have to care for grandma or pay for her to be in a home. And because my parents had this house they did better saving for retirement and sold the home and bought a condo in a retirement village for cash. So my parents won't need to be in a home until very late in their lives. So we do not have the financial burden of caring for them, and because of that our lives are more financially stable.
All because my grandfather fought in WWII and was the right color, I was raised in a more stable environment that was more financially secure. Too many other families were robbed of this by a racist system.
