Rittenhouse Judge Tells Jury to Applaud for Defense Witness

As the defense witness was being seated, the judge asked the courtroom if anyone was a veteran.

One person raised his hand.

The defense witness.

The judge then told the jury and courtroom to applaud veterans to show appreciation for their sacrifices.

I don't think Lorne Michaels would allow that level of disrespect for the dead to be joked over.

It’s so nice they recognize veterans and in a federal courthouse I can see why it’s done. Sad only one person was a veteran. I’m surprised they hold court today.

7. Yeah, but practical matters should govern when conducting a murder trial.

A judge shouldn't be giving the jury any subliminal bias towards or against any witness or person in the court.

If they wanted to applaud the guy before the jury got in, fine. But it's all business once the jury gets seated.

Also, minor quibble, but this is Wisconsin state court, not federal court.

for a judge to instruct a jury to give applause to a defense witness, regardless of whether doing so engenders a lack of trust in the objectivity of the court we rely on to be objective at all costs?

And everyone deserve an applause today for serving. It was a nice gesture and far to rare which is why it’s even news sadly.
