Obviously, not a close friend. More of a friend of a friend situation.
I was shocked to learn of his death, and doubly shocked that he had not been vaccinated.
I thought better of him. He was a nice guy, worked his whole career in Fish & Wildlife, dedicated to the well-being of our native fauna. He spent most of the Arizona summers, in the desert, bringing water to endangered species. Camping in the middle of nowhere, with no a/c.
He'd recently retired, but was still very much an outdoorsy type.
I don't understand. I just don't understand.
His girlfriend's son was really sick with COVID, but survived. He went down with it shortly after.
Last text he made was to another of my friends (she was an ex-girlfriend, but they were still friends): I love you.

(34,075 posts)he sounds like he was a wonderful person.
of course i don't know why he wasn't vaccinated but maybe there was some legit medical reason. a friend of mine had severe health issues and the doctors/medical team did not want her to get a covid vaccine. finally, *finally* she was able to have surgery (she had part of a lung removed along with a large tumor) and at last she is now fully vaccinated. and her twenty something son lived with her--but he was pretty isolated, didn't work, rarely went out. and now they feel safe about him having a job--which he only recently got. (the kid had gotten vaccinated as soon as he could btw)
it was for people like my friend, who was so compromised, that masks & distancing was/is so important.
maybe your friend was in a similar situation.
again, i'm sorry for your loss.

(24,777 posts)more natural, holistic health regimes to steer away from the vacc. So, not just the rightwing extremist conspiracy types.
Anyone else come across this?

(11,498 posts)Very liberal has a section of people that won't get vaccinated because of that holistic lifestyle.
It's sad between them and the conservative types around my town my area has been hit hard.

Holistic health doctors.
Unfortunately, steering too far away from modern Western medicine can take you too far in the other direction, over where chiropractors can cure anything from an aching neck to infectious disease.
I myself have tried acupuncture and respect the practice. A chiropractor helped my mothers injured back after years of intractable pain. When I was pregnant and nursing, Adele Daviss book Lets Have Healthy Children was my bible.
But all along I have recognized that as much as other modalities have to teach us, Western Medicine excels at certain things, like surgery (ie for cancer) and the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.
And then I guess our people forgot.
The tragedy we face today is the number of parents who fell for the anti-vaxxer quacks, and how that laid the groundwork for what we see today.

(90,834 posts)I cannot waste energy arguing/fighting with them. It is what it is and as for my husband and me, we've had two shots of Moderna and in another week or so will get the booster.
As I say, I cant be angry with them any more, but I am sad and resigned. I reserve my white-hot anger for Trump and his enablers in politics and the propaganda media.

(34,195 posts)Young man in his mid-twenties; married and with a young baby.
Neither he nor his wife have been vaccinated.
He tells me they are waiting to "see what happens".
They are not sure about this "vaccine thing".

Well, he did good work watching over AZ fauna.
And bringing water to endangered species in the summer.
