Our Attorney General has acted with dispatch and integrity, with respect for democracy and the rule of law, and the principle of equal justice under the law. Many of us were dubious that he would do so, and I think that as a community, we owe him a renewal of respect and appreciation for what he is doing. I for one give him a great big
Thank you, Merrick Garland!! - - - - - - - - -

(5,256 posts)You sometimes see announcements of grand juries being empaneled, but that typically occurs with state matters more often than with federal matters. Federal grand jury matters are supposed to be conducted in secret.

(21,614 posts)as a good AG should be. Indictments come from grand juries, not from the media or from armchair attorneys.

Had I done the dirty shit Trump & his team did, all the years he did it, and knowing AG Garland's success with the Biggest criminal convictions as he has done, I'd be fking jonesing into madness, while AG Garland just remains silent, never offering a single hint of who, what, where nor when.
Pure paranoia has a way of making criminals crazy, & AG Garland's silence is not an error, but intentional.

(5,695 posts)I follow Teri Kanefield on Twitter. She has been on point explaining how, in order to save democracy, our side cannot act in undemocratic ways, no matter how much we would like to. When both sides give up on democracy, it is truly dead. So of course we wanted Bannon dragged off to jail immediately, but that's not how our justice system works. Nor should it work that way.

Like the Attorney General acted because some random people on social media whined about him.

(10,072 posts)I am seeing the same thing on other sites, people saying we got a win when yesterday the outrage was Fire Garland. I hope all the outrage rhetoric can at least be tapped down now.

(3,213 posts)Bannon maybe able to drag this out for awhile. If Trump wins in 2024, Bannon is getting another pardon, Garland still hasn't gone after Trump or the Trump family, and the Insurrectionists are still getting slaps on the wrist.
I'm glad to see something was finally done, but I'm reserving judgement until more real consequences happen.

(36,137 posts)Been there. Seen that. So has Merrick Badass Garland.
The U.S. Badass Constitution seems weak to bullies, but kicks their ass once The Idea Of Democracy is enforced.

(67,782 posts)....until today was only SEVENTEEN DAYS! That's the speed of light in legal proceedings.
The Grand Jury meets twice a month. Today was probably the first chance they had since October 26 to hand down an indictment.
Today was the day! They did it.
Thank you Attorney General Garland.

(11,109 posts)Real justice never moves as quickly as it does on TV cop shows.
We need to assume there will be motions to dismiss based on bogus claims of executive privilege that will have to be worked through. After that, the federal court cannot be expected to clear its docket to move this trial to the front of the line. (There are a few hundred insurrectionists' cases to be resolved.) The wheels of justice will grind slowly but they will grind fine. In the meanwhile Bannon will be running up attorney's fees with lawyers who will expect to be paid.
It's a good day for Democracy.

regarding the Bannon situation.
Read it slowly - read all of it.
I learned a lot!

(1,990 posts)I don't appreciate him waiting around for months knowing that the Republicans would seek to run out the clock, which they are doing. Trump will never face any consequences with people like this; he's made a career out of running out the clock. Garland knew this and still let it happen.
As Don Winslow says, "I miss consequences".

(23,302 posts)That's greased lightning compared to the usual glacial pace of federal prosecution decisions. To have moved so rapidly to indict, DOJ had to put together a prima facie case for conviction with blinding speed; clearly, they knew time was of the essence. Bannon can still play delay and drag it out for a long time with appeals and other tactics, but DOJ is pretty certain it has the goods.
Will things get back to TFG eventually? Who knows? But that may ultimately not be something Garland gets to decide.
If we can't be optimistic, perhaps we should at least reserve judgment until things play out further.
