As Rittenhouse trial winds down, polarizing judge lashes out

When closing arguments begin Monday in Kyle Rittenhouse's homicide trial, legal experts expect a dominant and unflinching arbiter to rule the courtroom until the end: Judge Bruce Schroeder.

Schroeder, 75, has not shied away from the national spotlight while presiding over the biggest case of his more than four decades on the bench in Kenosha County, Wisconsin.

During the almost two weeks of the trial, he has lashed out in anger, lectured the jury by citing Roman history and the Bible, and been a divisive figure to those watching the proceedings. On Friday, while hearing arguments about what to include in jury instructions, he quipped about getting text messages from "my few remaining friends" as part of a larger point about touchscreen technology on electronic devices.

Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, a Democrat, echoed sentiments on social media questioning his courtroom style, tweeting Schroeder is "an incompetent Judge on the case who ought not to be on the bench."

1. Yeah, I don't know enough about the law to know when this judge is stepping too far over the line

But when his antics draw more attention than the legal tactics of either the defense or prosecution, there's a problem.

3. Brings back memories of Judge Julius Hoffman from years ago

He presided over the trial of the Chicago Seven and his behavior from the bench was outrageous. He was about the same age and temperament as Judge Schroeder. Perhaps some judges should retire earlier, though in Hoffman's case, I'm not sure he was ever qualified to be a judge.

though I think there are some people who are very sharp in their seventies and of course there are no age restrictions on Supreme Court Justices. I'm not sure what the answer is, but unfortunately some people are not going to retire voluntarily even when they can no longer do the job. Perhaps some kind of review every year or so when a person gets past a certain age? If that is not feasible, then a mandatory age retirement seems to be the only alternative I can think of.

Are you in Illinois?

and listen to Cubs games when she was two. I grew up a Twins fan, but there games weren’t on cable in the early 80s, soon after we got married.

I mean figuratively....Rittenhouse is a literal bad actor with his fake no tears crying.

If that creep gets freed I hope he is sued privately and that the judge in this case gets booted.
