this past summer my daughter's neighbor got his roof redone
during the work my kid was looking out her kitchen window (doing dishes) and saw one of the workmen taking a piss in her backyard
then one of the workmen fell off the roof. after the ambulance took him away the rest of the crew went out for lunch.
my daughter went out front and talked to her neighbor who was looking at his unfinished roof. she told the neighbor one of the guys was peeing in her backyard--near some flowers. neighbor said he would tell their boss about it.
a day or so later, when they were finished with the roof, the boss decides to go around the neighborhood to drum up more business. knocks on my kid's door. says he'd give her a fair estimate and explained why the price would be so high--due to the price of plywood--because of all those riots and everyone had to keep boarding up store windows.
she wanted to say just because i'm white doesn't make me a racist like you
she wanted to say just because i'm a woman doesn't make me a fucking idiot
but she, not one for confrontation, and who had a baby and two barking dogs behind her, simply said:
"i guess my neighbor didn't tell you that it was my backyard one of your guys was peeing in"
lol. (she also has a sense of humor)
(i don't know what happened after that but suffice to say she did not have that company redo her roof)
anyway.... that's not really why the price of lumber was up this past summer
from feb. 2021:
The cost of lumber is going through the roof, and that is hitting the housing industry on all fronts. For homebuilders, renovation contractors and DIYers, the cost of projects is now far higher than it was just a year ago and about to cross into historic territory.
Softwood lumber prices are now about 112% higher than they were a year ago and have jumped 10% in just the past week, according to Random Lengths.
Increased demand for single-family housing, much of it driven by the coronavirus pandemic, has housing starts up 30% year over year, according to the U.S. Census. That is part of the issue on the demand side. There has also been a surge in home remodeling, as people sit at home longer and put money they would have spent on going out or traveling into their houses and properties
snip
But its not just demand that is pushing prices so high. Supply is completely off the mark because both mill operators and lumber dealers misread the 2020 market. Since housing starts and remodeling were weaker in 2019, they pulled back on production. The expectation was that 2020 would be much of the same.

(506 posts)I remember having a discussion withy brother and his conservative cronies. They hated Obama and hated Obamacare. Well, one of the guys fell off the roof and had to go to the hospital. He survived, but had big hospital bills because he lacked health insurance. Then he had to file for bankruptcy because of his medical bills. They bitch about health insurance and refuse to carry it.
