Starting with TFG, somehow those who participated believed that they could stop Joe Biden from becoming President by intimidating Congress into doing something completely unconstitutional.
Trump and his cronies did what they could to give the mob its opportunity. They withheld support to protect Congress from the mob. That mob was successful in getting into the Capitol and ran amok for a while. Trump riled up the rioters as best he could, then fled to his hidey hole to watch the fun.
And yet, by the time the mob got into the Capitol, Members of Congress and Senators had been moved to safe places. The mob was unorganized, unarmed, and had only numbers, sticks, some bear spray, and zip ties as weapons. The mob caused some injuries and deaths, and one member of the mob was shot and killed by a law enforcement person as she tried to go through a window on the interior.
Then, reinforcements showed up, no thanks to Trump, and made short work of clearing the mob from the Capitol. Once enough reinforcements were in place, the tear gas came out, and people were no longer able to get into the Capitol, that undisciplined and unorganized mob faded out of view as we all watched it go down.
A few hours later, and this is hugely important, Congress came back into the Capitol, which had been somewhat cleaned up after the mob was expelled. Representatives and Senators took their seats, the Vice President took the podium, and the electoral college vote was duly confirmed. Not long after that, just a few days later, Joe Biden took the oath of office at the inauguration.
The mob failed. The plan, so poorly designed, failed. Trump and his cronies failed. We won. The Constitution won. Our system won.
We need to remember that, and never forget it. We are stronger than we think. We can, and will, prevail.

(12,414 posts)We all need to go back to the days of the BLM demonstrations and remember; multiple thousands of people in hundreds of cities, in spite of health dangers, showed up to display there disgust of the treatment of Americans by out of control authorities.
1/6 was there best shot at protest and it was a complete failure resulting and deaths and the ultimate incarceration of many many cultists.

MineralMan
(146,327 posts)they remain unorganized, because there is no unity among them that all will listen to. It is, in short, a mob.
Federal authorities, on the other hand, are well-organized and are now under different leadership. Another such attempt on the Capitol would be met by a completely different response. The mob failed, and will never have another opportunity to behave in that way again.

(13,127 posts)The insurrectionists are busy passing state laws giving their legislatures the power to overturn the results of elections.
They are busy creating a mass movement based around white racial anxiety, a movement aligned with armed militias, and connected to radical elements in our military and police forces.
Yeah its just a clown show.

It is also hard to believe why or how, having obviously studied past coups and the world's most infamous insurrection - November 1917 - the plot leaders failed to support enough firepower to complete their power grab. Almost as if they hoped to ascede to power through chaos, blaming the fictitious Antifa, and meltdown of the existing political structure as by their own actions. And maybe that was true - it would allow them to escape blame if it failed. It was all "spontaneous". It was the Dissheveled Insurrection, just like its leader.

You are right though that the lack of organization and arms made the insurrection sure to fail. Mobs can accomplish only so much.

But go ahead and minimize the threat.

(146,327 posts)There is no longer support from the White House for it. I noticed that, but some seem to think the same conditions still prevail. They do not.
Still, you are free to make predictions as you see proper.

And the ample evidence that Trump can't admit mistakes were made which would be the first step one has to take in order to learn from them.
We are lucky to have such an opponent whose head is in La-La Land which precludes him and his cronies from formulating any plan that has a chance of success in the real world.
The only way your scenario can work is if you believe TFG is smart, well versed on the situation.

(51,057 posts)One of the major ones would be a strong cohesive group that is organized with plans not known by the government or outside groups.
There need to be domestic terrorist laws enacted that defeat these groups.

(51,057 posts)They can't keep it to themselves and have the ability to be successful. And when they get the word out it opens them to being infiltrated. Either way they fail. Anything they try to organize is spread to far apart. There are not enough people in the right locations to make it happen.

(1,587 posts)a road map for the next one , unless the necessary protections are put in place. tRump represents Putin, as does much of the GOP. Putin has spent decades, and hundreds of millions of dollars searching for the soft underbelly of American democracy and has found it in how we finance our elections, and in the loopholes of our legal system. We are facing a geopolitical genius, propaganda specialist, and master spy with unlimited resources. Those are some of the realities of the battlefield, and as long as he has most of the GOP in his pocket we are facing terrible odds.

(20,630 posts)He told CNNs State of the Union he feared Trump was formulating plans for a coup.
I think any objective observer would come to this conclusion: that he has evaluated what went wrong on 6 January. Why is it that he wasnt able to steal the election? Who stood in his way?
Every single American institution is just run by people. And you need the right people to make the right decision in the most difficult times. Hes going systematically through the country and trying to remove those people and install people who are going to do exactly what he wants them to do, who believe the big lie, who will go along with anything he says.

(12,875 posts)Rather than abandon the BIG LIE that incited the Jan 6 insurrection the Republican Party has embraced the false claims of a stolen election as justification for voter suppression and installing party operatives on election commissions, empowered to change results that don't go their way.
In other words, they redoubled their efforts at subverting democracy to sieze power.
Whether or not they ultimately succeed remains to be seen.

(82,383 posts)Just not possible from that activity.
As has been said, it would have to be from inside. We were in more danger during the Dubya administration. Cheney and Rumsfeld had dreams of using something like 911 to seize total power.
