Judge Rips Lawyer in Ahmaud Arbery Case for Freaking Out About Black Pastors

‘Reprehensible’

The Georgia judge presiding over the trial for the three alleged murderers of Ahmaud Arbery denied a mistral request on Monday—before slamming a defense attorney for his comments about Black pastors in the courtroom. “Your words have an impact on a lot of what is going on,” Chatham County Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley told Kevin Robert Gough, an attorney representing suspect William Bryan, who filmed the fatal chase of the 25-year-old Black man last year.

“Emotions are neither unreasonable or unexpected in a murder case,” the judge added, calling Gough’s comments “reprehensible.”

The rebuke came as Walmsley was denying Gough’s motion for a mistrial, apparently spurred by Rev. Jesse Jackson entering the courtroom on Monday with Arbery’s family. Last week, Gough came under fire for attempting to bar “any more Black pastors coming” into the courtroom under the pretense that their presence would influence the jury. “We have all these community leaders fearful they are going to burn the whole city down,” Gough added on Monday after seeing Jackson in the courtroom comforting Arbery’s mother, who began to cry during testimony.

No. How many decades …

No. How many generations …

No … Centuries, maybe?

… before America finally grows up and gets beyond this shit?

Are we doomed to failure - permanently?

Are the problems that profound?

Is the damage that deep?

Sorry to say, but the absolute love of bigotry and the vile delusion of white supremacy are essential to the identity of a huge percentage of our fine nation, far more fundamental than religion, and as a group they will never willingly turn from it.

still its monuments, replacement protests, and political effects. Growing up in Florida, going to school in the panhandle, and living for a bit in Lester Maddox's GA, I saw that.

And not just in the South, either; too many everywhere drink it with their kids, while the grandchildren get it served up during family and neighborhood and public gatherings. The only way to stop its effect is for high school kids to move out as early as possible, for at least their college years and longer.

EDIT for clarity: "Every white Southerner"

My family is from the south. I grew up here. Neither I, nor my parents are racist, nor am I raising my son as a racist. In fact, we all hate the Nazi-wannabe asshats.

Don’t paint us all with the same broad brush. Not cool.

grew up in the South and I should know better than to generalize like this.

Not cool. You're right. Absolutely significant numbers of Southerners do not at all pass on racism, and whatever racism is taught is certainly not limited to whites.

I'm sorry.

I don't know why I was so intensely irrational about the South, having grown up here and gone to FSU, a fine school.

Thank you for jumping on me about this. I have no excuse.

Are you certain that my life-long Democrat parents fed me "haterade?" Are you sure that I raised my child to be a racist?

Be careful of that broad brush. You never know where stuff will splash.

There are many, many fine people in the South. Even white ones ( ) I moved away from my native area years ago but then and now I know a plethora of educators, artists, musicians, low level politicians and lawyers, medical personnel, and blue collar folks who live with and love and are in families with people of many different cultures and backgrounds. Yes, there are a whole lot of people who are bigots and fools and rubes. But you would do well to appreciate the good people who are in the trenches and not just throwing stones from some false self righteous hill.

I know better and got lost in anger. I've actually given long, positive defense of the South's culture and contributions -- food, music, manners, inventions, writers, artists, etc. -- and should not have burst out like that today.

I think Sharpton and Jackson being there help keep everyone's behavior better for the moment, but I'd hate for cases to devolve into which side could draw the better celebrity.
