Investigators want to know why a 16-year-old suspected carjacker is dead after a chase from Hollywood to Miami-Dade County, and some witnesses are saying police may be responsible.
The officers who were on the scene Sunday night were not wearing body cameras at the time, so it will be their word against the witnesses if those witnesses were to step forward to authorities.
Witnesses told WPLG-Ch. 10 that the officers repeatedly kicked the suspect in the head and across his body after he was pulled from the crashed Alfa Romeo he drove from Broward County with police in pursuit. Video broadcast by the station, provided by an unnamed witness, shows several officers converged around a car Sunday night. But the footage, taken from a distance, is too grainy to either support or refute the allegations.
Theres been no word from the medical examiner on how the teen died. A call to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiners Office was not returned Tuesday. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is reviewing the case, a step taken when a civilian death follows police action.
