They're associated with a lot of negative facets of college life: alcoholism, date rape, hazing, elitism. They don't all behave like depraved animals, but fraternities seem to be the perfect petri dish for groups of men to explore their dark side. At the very least, colleges should keep them on a short leash and ban individual fraternities when they're caught doing something seriously wrong.

When I was an undergrad, the fraternity basketball league allowed each frat to have 2 team members not in the frat.
I was asked each year by 6 to 8 of the frats.
Every year, I picked the team with the least objectionable members. Not the best fellas. The least annoying & objectionable!
While there were a few guys in TEK that I thought were on dudes, I wouldn't play with the jock frat because...too many high school football players. My experience was that there was a 1% chance a HS football could be basketball worth a damn!
I still wanted to win, after all.
We had one frat, where I swear every member was premed or prelaw. Not one guy in that frat was someone I'd be willing to spend 5 minutes with.
I was GDI, and proud of it.

yelling lewd stuff at women, etc. I could just see one of those aholes trying to haze me.

I used to laugh like hell when a professor would change their exam from the ones in the fraternity test files that they used to cheat. They'd look at the test, see the questions were different. and you'd hear collective groans. I'd just keep answering because I spent every spare minute studying.

My guess is that they all went on to be millionaires by making other people do intellectual work, lying to clients, offering entertainment approaching pimping to big customers, etc.
