No such thing as an "accidental discharge." Someone violated the 4-rules and thankfully no-one was physically injured in addition to mass emotional-distress for the travelers.

Something involving a strong earthquake shaking a loaded and very old revolver off the range bench. Even then I'd ask "Hey Devil Child why was the revolver left loaded on the table if not in active use."

So I just talked myself out of the only fantastical accidental discharge I could envision.

Obey the 4-rules at all times.

1. Treat all guns as if they are loaded.

2. Never point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

1. Always keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction.

2. Treat all firearms as if they were loaded.

3. Keep you trigger finger outside the the guard and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

4. Be certain of your target and your life of fire and what lies beyond your target.

If a 1911 or similar external hammer pistol is loaded in what the US Military calls condition 2 (round in chamber, but hammer not cocked), and that pistol is dropped and strikes the ground hammer first, it can fire.

"He was cleaning his gun..."

No, he fucking shot himself.

I'm such a cynical son of a bitch these days (it's okay, my mom laughs when I say that) that I'm likely to say something inappropriate even in the face of tragedy.

Nine times out of ten the stupid gun was in the hand of someone who shouldn't have had a gun in the first place.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. ET when a "prohibited item" was detected in a passenger's property while going through the X-ray screening at the security checkpoint, Robert Spinden, the Transportation Security Administration's federal security director for Georgia, said in a news conference. The property was flagged for a "secondary search," he said.

"During that secondary search, the passenger lunged into his property, grabbing a firearm that was located inside, which ultimately discharged," Spinden said. "The passenger then fled the security checkpoint through an adjacent exit lane with his firearm."

these guns have a mind of their own........ You can dress em up but you can't take em anywhere without their showing off.

You can't imagine how many heart to heart conversations I've had with my guns about not discharging in public, but they just don't seem to listen.

I'd add the thingie but this shit is out of hand.

having a round in the chamber in a semi auto when carrying or storing. Hammer should never rest on a live round in a revolver. This rule could eliminate most accidents.

If an external hammer pistol falls and hits hammer first onto a hard surface, it can fire without any person holding it.
