Masculinity and the Republicans/evangelicals

I listened to this podcast with the historian on her book Jesus and John Wayne: …. I recommend it to anyone who has not yet read this book. Politics over the last 30 years starts to make sense and it is very, very disturbing.

Why Republicans Can’t Stop Talking About Masculinity

According to historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez, this way of talking about masculinity has its roots in conservative evangelical spaces, but it’s going mainstream. Du Mez wrote a book last year called Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation, about how the model of masculinity in evangelicalism went from emulating the qualities of Jesus to emulating those of the actor John Wayne, and how that has shaped culture and politics ever since. Hawley, Vance and Cawthorn all have deep ties to evangelical Christianity and frequently reference the importance of faith in their lives and, especially for Cawthorn and Hawley, in their political philosophies. I spoke with Du Mez about the history of masculinity as an idea in Republican politics and why it’s suddenly so popular. This conversation has been edited and condensed.

...I learned in kindergarten??

"But he was reckless. He was uncivil. He was crass. He wasn't going to be cowed.... He was a bully...."

So, masculinity isn't providing and protecting and pointing the way forward for your progeny. It's being a petulant, ill-mannered toddler throwing tantrums and picking on smaller, weaker people? It's behaving like a six year old as a grown man. Got it.

Seems to me the Evangelical men's biggest problem is having to overcompensated for having to proclaim their undying love and devotion to...a man. They all love Jeesus.

Christianity is a wholly made up religion, long after Jesus walked around.
Therefore: they can make up and change who Jesus was.

Jesus was a dark skinned man who was a Jew. You know, a group many of you “christians” despise.

Also. There is no such thing as divinity.
Otherwise the smiting would have resumed years ago. Maybe us or them. I’m willing to take that bet.

Evangelical Christianity is a Christianity. After Luther, there are no rules about who's in the club.
