Divide & conquer: A sample of 32,315 pro-Rittenhouse hashtag tweets, Nov 19-20, showed 29,609 with disabled geolocation. Of those, 17,701 were listed as foreign, but a deep scrub revealed most of those were in Russia, China, and the EU. @Tara_Writer

Any means necessary. It's a matter of national security.

(63,220 posts)the ignorant racist fuckheads who now cheer Rittenhouse as a living martyred saint were going to support him regardless of Putin's schemes.

(58,785 posts)support is significantly less than it appeared to be. If those people aren't quite crowding up, how are indepedent and conservative suburban voters feelng about him?
Not that it means most to all won't vote Republican, but still. How much damage might this have done? Every little post-crazy bit helps.
KPN
(15,649 posts)hugely important. More than half of the pro-Rittenhouse hashtag tweets came from Russia, China and the like. How many of the 45-percent or so that originated in the US were influenced in the past by foreign operations? These people aid and abet the enemy of democracy and real freedom.

Philosophizing Fool
(73 posts)Foreign actors are behind roughly half of the tweets. The Republicans may be less inclined towards justifying the verdict with violence than some of us would want to believe. We are being divided and played for fools, not necessarily as an attack against democracy as much as an attack against our nation and values. If that same lens were held up to the far left messages that anger and spur the right, would the same results appear? Chaos, confusion, anger, and distrust are powerful tools and each of us has been and will be mislead by people using them for nefarious purposes. A few tweets cost much less than a spy or bomb and may be even more destructive on a national playing field.

(45,519 posts)RWers openly fantasize about killing people they don't like and will pick a fight to justify it as self defense. There are some factors in this case unique to Wisconsin that may not work in more liberal states.

(5,429 posts)America, with it's misinterpretation of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, and the cray-cray attitude to gun worship in America, is ripe territory for anti-American propaganda from outside forces meant to escalate civil unrest.
Not unexpected, surely?
Notice the gun? Seeing the Constitution was written December 15, 1791, it's the wrong weapon. Should be a muzzle loading long rifle!
And since when are teenage boys wanting to big note themselves part of a 'well regulated militia'?
Or the 'security of a free State' - how was that helped by Kyle's actions and the subsequent legal farce that basically rubber stamped them as acceptable?
It's all ripe territory for bot farms stirring trouble!
Now if it's possible to identify malicious foreign tweets, why aren't they filtered out at source?

(7,839 posts)on the back of freedom of speech its impossible to dismount .though as you say maybe it could be reined in?
Aussie105
(5,429 posts)a level of responsibility on the part of the speaker to be factual and not inflammatory.
No American can shout 'Fire!' in a darkened picture theatre, or 'Gun!' in a crowded space, or 'Bomb!' in a crowded airport if those aren't factual.
There are limits, in other words.
'Freedom of Speech' used as a weapon needs to be treated as evil, with no thought given to cutting it's head off at the source. No, it's not censorship, just smart thinking.
In short, Twitter - get proactive and do not allow malicious tweets!

(5,429 posts)Well, that's the whole aim of the bot farm spread misinformation, isn't it?
Makes you go passive when some immediate and affirmative action is needed. Twitter needs active filtering, gun laws need changing, etc. But you feel powerless to do anything. Right?
So it's working, right?

I'm, however, old enough to have thought we had won most of these battles or at least we were headed in the right direction. I have to keep telling myself that we are headed in the right direction which is why the push back is getting stronger.

We all REALLY need to remember this. I understand that it may be harder for those who live in areas that are heavily MAGA infested to believe it, but I think it's true, overall, that those people ARE in the minority.
