A Time For Justice ?

A jury in Brunswick, GA found three white men guilty of murdering a young black man and many celebrated, because they believed justice was done.

A jury in Kenosha, WI found a young white man innocent of murdering two people during a riot and after he pleaded self-defense, and many celebrated because they believed justice had been done.

There are 40-50 people in Washington, DC now holding subpoenas that might want to take notice. Justice is coming. Do they believe they will will get the first jury and not the second jury? Or do they believe they will never face a jury?

It is now up to our justice system to save democracy.

Today was a beginning.

Ahmad got his apparent justice.
Absent the video, the goobers walk. And the rednecks have yet to be sentenced or exhaust their inevitable appeals. Ahmad gets no appeals.

Until that video was leaked to a radio station, I'm quite sure the defendants thought they'd gotten away with it. And yeah, Ahmad Arbery is dead.

But today, justice was done. It can be done. It must be done. We should celebrate that justice is possible, but it takes commitment and fortitude. There are powerful forces in our society dedicated to blunting justice, making people despair that it can ever be found, who want justice to be a will o' the wisp, a chimera. an ideal that can never be reached or even approached. Today they lost, but they'll be back tomorrow, working to institutionalize hatred and violence.

Savor today. Be ready to get back after it again tomorrow. Bless the Arbery family and their steadfast determination.

They are working very hard to institutionalize hatred and violence. We should not despair.

This was a good day. There will be, from time to time, less satisfying cases. Some injustices. But this and the George Floyd verdict suggest that things are getting better.

Many thought it would never happen with the make-up of the jury, but they were proven wrong.

You have to trust the jury system. It gets some things wrong, it gets many things right. Every substantial case should be reviewed ad nauseum, and over time. Appeals should be freely explored. There should be more uniform instructions to juries, and to guide the behavior of judges. But in a free society you have to trust human nature to think, evaluate, reason, and decide.
