I am in Pagosa Springs , CO. San Juan County.
We had a great time for 30 or so mins at the far SW quadrant of Echo lake. We then drove north towards the road. We were still 1/3 mile from the highway so I let Pax run free.
I was parked next to a white sedan. Pax was sniffing and exploring as normal until he got to the sedan. A huge Pit Bull (Pax is 80 lbs) jumped to a car window. This dog was bigger than mine by far. The noise was explosive. Pax ran back to my car. Pax is an 80 lb husky with NO FEAR - but he was jarred.
A few moments later the cars owner started walking back from the lake. I realized that what I thought was a fishing pole was a shot gun, and he also had some sort of assault rifle slung low. I have been coming to Echo Lake for 25+ years and have NEVER seen a gun.
I got Paxton into the car. The shotgun guy was trying to say something. I took my headphones off. He was trying to be 'friendly'. I asked him why he had a gun at echo lake. He told me that he was shooting ducks.
I felt literally nauseous. Been coming to the lake for 25-30 years and have NEVER seen a gun.
I 'rolled my eyes at him ' and drove off with him jumping and screaming in my rearview mirror.
I had been home for 20 mins or so when the 'See something Do something' from the early 2000's kicked in. I called the San Juan Sheriff. I really do not want to go into detail. but they told me that guns are legal and that I was an idiot to think otherwise.
Gonna enjoy a big bowl before dinner this year........................................

(402 posts)Several weeks ago, my boyfriend and I were finishing a bicycle ride along the Truckee River in Sparks, Nevada. Sparks is right next to Reno. Two guys pulled up in a pick-up truck, and began walking down the bicycle path. Both had long guns. Since I know next to nothing about guns, I will just say they looked like hunting rifles. The only things to shoot at in that area are Canada Geese and other ducks. Also wild horses. I called the Sparks police and before I had left the area, five Sparks Police cars were headed that way at high speed. I don't know the outcome, but they took me very seriously. Could be that it is near populated areas. Don't be discouraged from calling in these types of incidences. It may have been that it was an isolated area, not that it should matter.
