Most things are like that though. 3-4 cheap replacements over the years add up to a lot more than it would have been to just buy the good one in the first place.

Whatever propaganda moves the Russians were playing couldn't have the same effect as since 2000.

Murdoch didn't have FOX News until 1996 and he was no fan of the Russians at that time. Putin didn't become PM until 1999 and it took a while for what we now call the trolls to get up and running. Post 2002 definitely.

There was clear intel of a Russian program during the W regime. CIA and NSA were both very concerned. But the public focus was pointed at Afghanistan and Iraq. The Neo-Cons were too interested in exploiting Iraqi Oil and building a "new" middle east political balance and wrongly assumed the Russian empire was in decline.

The Russians definitely had knives out for Obama. They saw the way the GOP was getting radicalized by the Tea Party faction and sought to amplify it.
