a direct line from the White House and the command center Sources have told the Guardian that just hours before the deadly attack on the US Capitol this year, Donald Trump made several calls from the White House to top lieutenants at the Willard hotel in Washington to discuss ways to stop or delay the certification of Joe Bidens election win from taking place on 6 January.
The former president relayed that his vice-president, Mike Pence, was reluctant to go along with the plan to commandeer his largely ceremonial role at the joint session of Congress in a way that would allow Trump to retain the presidency for a second term.
He then pressed his aides about how to stop Bidens certification from taking place, and delay the certification process to get alternate slates of electors for Trump sent to Congress.
Why is this significant? Trumps remarks reveal a direct line from the White House and the command center at the Willard. The conversations also show Trumps thoughts appear to be in line with the motivations of the pro-Trump mob that carried out the Capitol attack.
When did Trump make the calls? He phoned his lieutenants at the Willard sometime between the late evening on 5 January and the early hours of 6 January.....

(6,017 posts)The first time I read of him stating that, I figured he was being prudent if not a bit overly cautious.
The most recent time, I realized he means it.

(21,402 posts)Without the data on those calls it's useless. Trump can claim he called to tell them to protest peaceably or maybe called to tell Bannon to take a shower before coming to the insurrection er rally.

(16,856 posts)He orchestrated the whole thing. He might not have known every little detail, but it was all done at his request. It's always seemed more than likely that he did it, but there's testimony now. There's no reason not to indict his ass.

(26,319 posts)Because the phone calls discussing ways to try and block Bidens certification are not evidence that he helped orchestrate the attempted insurrection itself.
Now, do I personally think he was involved? Yes, but that is simply my personal opinion.

We had a sitting President orchestrating an attack on our Country and it's Representative government, this is second to secession before the Civil War?
This was an act of war.

(21,402 posts)The perception that MSNBC is the voice of liberal common sense is a manufactured and managed perception created by people like Vanguard and Blackrock to get more money. MSNBC is owned and managed by Wall Street and Big Pharma. You won't ever see a msnbc anchor push for single payer health care. Why do you think so many msnbc anchors got fired when they had high ratings? Sure would be nice to see Keith Olbermann and Dylan Ratigan on msnbc prime time, wouldn't it?

(22,431 posts)The former president first told the lieutenants his vice-president, Mike Pence, was reluctant to go along with the plan to commandeer his largely ceremonial role at the joint session of Congress in a way that would allow Trump to retain the presidency for a second term.
But as Trump relayed to them the situation with Pence, he pressed his lieutenants about how to stop Bidens certification from taking place on 6 January, and delay the certification process to get alternate slates of electors for Trump sent to Congress.
The former presidents remarks came as part of strategy discussions he had from the White House with the lieutenants at the Willard a team led by Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Boris Epshteyn and Trump strategist Steve Bannon about delaying the certification.
Multiple sources, speaking to the Guardian on the condition of anonymity, described Trumps involvement in the effort to subvert the results of the 2020 election.

(10,063 posts)The president of the United States committed insurrection, a crime punishable by fines and imprisonment. I would think if they have any patriotism they would be knocking on Garlands door at least (and perhaps they haveits just frustrating to see nothing after a crime was committed nearly a year ago).

If the indictments come down before the agenda is passed it will never happen because the MSM will go ape shit wild and the right will go nuts. Legislation first...indictments after.

(472 posts)The public's outage is always a short term thing. The hammer needs to come down, but not yet. A meticulous, solid case must be made right before the primary season starts to have enough impact to overcome the Republican rigging of the next election through gerrymandering and propaganda. Don't give the Trumpists time to twist the narrative(s), and hammer them with their lies throughput the campaign season.

Because if they don't support Congress (the First Branch) getting archival documents, they're nullifying a few hundred years of defined norms and would weaken the Second Branch's executive branch power over the National Archives, which weakens the historical record of government.
The only next remedy would then be to keep Democrats in the majority in both houses in 2022 and proceed with Judicial Branch reform at the federal level.
