A FedEx Ground driver dumped hundreds of packages in a Blount County ravine at least six different times, Sheriff Mark Moon said Tuesday.
The drivers identity has not been publicly released, but FedEx officials told AL.com Monday that the driver is no longer providing service on behalf of the company.
Moon said FedEx is now a victim of six different theft of property cases involving about 450 individual victims.
Some of those are Blount County residents and some are not, the sheriff said.

It probably takes at least a little while for enough customers to complain about their expected packages not arriving, and time for those complaints to be relayed to Fedex by the vendors if customers contact their vendors rather than Fedex with their complaints, so that a pattern emerges and red flags are raised. I'm sure Fedex would have caught on at some point even if the dumped packages hadn't been spotted first.
Even if the common denominator is a particular driver, in some cases it could be than the driver in common isn't the problem, but the places where that driver drives, like neighborhoods with a lot of porch pirates.

(46,775 posts)I know, because I think two of those packages are mine. I delivered them to a relative a couple of months ago, and they wouldn't bother with a complaint. It took me a while to figure out that they just resign themselves to these kind of abuses, because it happens all too often.

(5,559 posts)How many other packages are reported stolen off people's porches every day? Especially this time of year?
What percentage of the load was dumped each time?
Given the volume that Fedex handles in a day, this probably wouldn't stand out like you would expect

(8,620 posts)Fed Ex Express is corporate owned and operated. I don't have time to go over this in detail, and I've passed this info on before, but the short version is that this is one reason why Express is better than Ground.

(15,564 posts)These trucks are all equipped with GPS. My brother drove for FedEx for a year back in the 1990's and he said they monitored everything he did. He once stopped at a farm stand to get some produce and got called in by his boss who confronted him about using company time to do personal errands.

(5,559 posts)Fedex is short handed across the board going into the holiday rush, so much that they gave an earnings warning last quarter that it would impact the company's overall revenue significantly.

(15,564 posts)My brother had been a truck driver all his life for a family owned electrical supply company, and in his late 50's got the job at Fedex. He said they would actually monitor and track how many minutes it took for him to delivery something. They were given a certain number of minutes and they were told to run from the truck to the door back to the truck. Ha! Knowing my brother, he probably said, "F... this crappy job" and he quit.
