In 2008, they ran a broken down old geezer who was, decades and decades ago, was seen as a war hero and was a POW. While he became a taciturn, grumpy old man who exhibited signs of chronic flatulence, he at least once showed the basic decency to tell and even crazy old woman that Obama was a US citizen (maybe the highlight if his enture campaign).
This geezer chose a right wing idiot governor for her brash talk and reasonably good looks. While brash and attractive to the sophomoric male brain typical of right wing yahoos, she was, really, an uninformed dolt who was truly clueless about what it took to be president . . . . or a heartbeat away. Her biggest asset, it turned out, was her beauty pageant experience as she waved on stage at the repub convention.
All of that, as bad as it was, was eclipsed this cycle. The repubs chose a liar who, apart from some serious robber baron bina fides, is monumentally unqualified to be president. He lacks empathy. He lacks foreign policy experience. He lacks a soul. His eyes, akin to Quint's description of those of a shark, exhibit absolutely no connection to people. He has no guiding morality that anyone can discern. Most damning, however, is his proven, time and again, history of lies. He lies freely and about anything and everything. He is shifty. He is untrustworthy.
And he picks as his running mate, a younger man who is everything he is, only worse. He picks a man who has the need to lie about even trivial things, like his mountain climbing and marathon running. The simple fact he even ran a marathon would impress me greatly; the time wouldn't matter a bit. He is a man who coldly wishes to take away any remaining shred of the nation's social safety net.
Can there be any worse candidates than this pair?
Frighteningly, I expect there are. And I expect we'll see them next cycle.

(26,117 posts)Paul Ryan's "rising star" status has hit the skids. I don't think I've heard him mentioned in the media since his abysmal debate performance. He might have been a contender for 2016, but his shtick as the "smart numbers guy" for the Republicans has been blown out of the water.
