Celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz has announced his bid for the open Senate seat in Pennsylvania, with a statement that did not mention the state beyond the headline.
The longtime New Jersey resident did not mention the Keystone State in the body of his statement, but did refer to the state directly in a one-minute video posted to his Twitter account.
While the announcement was entitled "Why I'm running to be a senator from Pennsylvania," it focused mainly on Oz's own personal history and a discussion of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, rather than issues specific to the state.
Oz's statement criticized the government's handling of the pandemic and took particular aim at lockdown measures, saying that "the arrogant, closed-minded people in charge closed our parks, shuttered our schools, shut down our businesses, and took away our freedom."
"America should have been the world leader on how to beat the pandemic. Although we had some moments of brilliance, such as the gift to the world of mRNA vaccines made possible by President Donald Trump's Operation Warp Speed, many great ideas were squashed," Oz went on.
In a video he shared on Twitter, Oz specifically referred to Pennsylvania.
"As a heart surgeon, I know how precious life is," Oz said.
"Pennsylvania needs a conservative who will put America first, one who can reignite our divine spark, bravely fight for freedom and tell it like it is."
Oz has lived in New Jersey for two decades but began voting in Pennsylvania's elections this year by absentee ballot. He is registered at his in-laws' address, according to the Associated Press.

(25,816 posts)trump fucked the covid-19 response immensely, party in an attempt to profit from the pandemic.
Biden made huge strides in contrast. So let me guess--Oz is a trump-humper.

(49,002 posts)Some ideas deserved to be squashed. Others that got squashed, like mask mandates, were good ones.
"divine spark" -- appeal to base christians
"bravely fight for freedom" -- dog whistle to anti-maskers and anti-vaxers
The mRNA vaccines had been under development for 9 (nine) years before Covid came along. The companies quickly pivoted to target them against Covid, before tRump stopped calling it a hoax. tRump did not "make mRNA vaccines possible". It is a lie to say he did. Operation Warp Speed did help with production.
But tRump's malAdministration did not have any credible plan for vaccine rollout. Biden had to scrap it and start from scratch before he was even inaugurated.

(16,399 posts)Voting by mail in a locality where you don't actually live sounds like exactly the kind of election fraud Repugs claim to be all up in arms about. Never mind running for office to represent a state where you don't live. 😱
I hereby dare the PA GOP to go after this guy! (But I know better than to hold my breath.)

(2,636 posts)Well, there were never any "Lockdowns." We were asked to shelter in place while essential workers (the underpaid and overworked) kept things going. We were asked to remain socially distant if we had to venture out, and then, the horror, we were asked to mask up.
Fun fact that "Dr." Oz overlooks in his diatribe: all that stay in/essential worker/mask up? Yeah, that all started under...TFG. Actually, individual states, since TFG abdicated any and all responsibility while downplaying the virus and lying about it.
Deep Pocket dark money is pushing Oz--he has name recognition for the rubes--and they're running against pandemic straw men. The GOP must be pissing their pants about Fetterman.
We've lost no freedom, we're vaccinated (70% of adults) and boostered (13%), and we still mask up and choose carefully with whom to holiday and celebrate and hang out inside. We're adapting to life with this virus, just like we manage the flu, just like chicken pox, or shingles, or herpes simplex. Kids and teachers have been back in school since August 2020.
If Omicron proves to be more transmissible, but with milder symptoms, I foresee a much more "normal" spring and summer. They're running against TFG's phuck up, and Biden's already cleaning it up. It's the great Reset, and the vaxx holdouts and Maga types can't figure out how to set the clock on their VCRs.

(7,724 posts)I live here. Fetterman is very popular here, most Pennsylvanians know him, ie: Name recognition. Conor Lamb is not well known, or even known by most.

(34,195 posts)I am on my phone at the moment so cannot post it.
It showed about six candidates in the Democratic listing.
Fetterman and Lamb were the only two with any real support.
As I recall Lamb was at 17% and Fetterman was that 26%.
Fetterman had dropped drastically from the previous polling and the trucks went mostly to the undecided column.
