SCOTUS Barrett: Simply adopt the unwanted baby

Wow. "Just" carry the fetus to term. No concern for mother's health along the way or the power of maternal bonding with the baby she spends 9 months making. Just adopt. Solution.

The attorney in support of Roe had just got started when Clarence Thomas interrupts and goes down an unrelated path. Then all the anti-Roe justices starting piling on. The woman never got to deliver a linear argument. She sure is qualified to handle everything thrown at her. Then, at the end, Thomas said I know the concern is abortion (ya think????). She answers it is about liberty.

My body, my choice, baby (pun intended).

Of course, only certain women will be required to provide proof. And exactly how do you prove such a thing? Did you take too many Ibuprofen, have some wine, exercise too hard? Off to jail with you, we’re behind in our quota for shipping people to the private prisons.

And as for adoption, few racists (and we have a lot of them in this country) are willing to adopt anything but a perfect white baby, leaving all the poor minority women who did not want more children to struggle with feeding their children and sinking into ever greater poverty.

Perhaps most outrageous was Justice Roberts’ comment that 15 weeks should be plenty of time to get an abortion. He isn’t a doctor, but he should know (but probably doesn’t care) that tests performed at 20 weeks determine the viability of a pregnancy or the fetus. It is then that abnormalities appear. And the woman’s life can be threatened at any time throughout pregnancy. What about women who learn that they have aggressive cancer at week 21? Sorry, you can’t have an abortion and you can’t have chemo or we’ll prosecute for for endangering a fetus. Try not to die before you birth the baby.

The Supreme Court and politicians need to stay out of medical decisions.

And of course there's the cost of raising a child with disabilities that a woman would now have to carry to term.

That cost is a critical consideration of Roe v Wade being overturned is kind of horrific in what is supposed to be a great country, but here we are.

She thought Obama wouldn't appoint anyone as good as she was -- not taking into account the fact that a future Republican President would replace her with a Republican on the far right. But Obama's appointments -- Elana Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor -- are solid progressives, and they're ALIVE.

Also, RBG was sure that abortion rights weren't threatened, and that was a gross miscalculation.

ELLE: When it comes to abortion rights, does the pendulum have to swing in a more conservative direction before it starts to swing back?

RBG: No, I think it's gotten about as conservative as it will get.

ELLE: I'm not sure how to ask this, but a lot of people who admire and respect you wonder if you'll resign while President Obama is in office.

RBG: Who do you think President Obama could appoint at this very day, given the boundaries that we have? If I resign any time this year, he could not successfully appoint anyone I would like to see in the court. [The Senate Democrats] took off the filibuster for lower federal court appointments, but it remains for this court. So anybody who thinks that if I step down, Obama could appoint someone like me, they're misguided.

When anti-choicers talk about alternatives to abortion, they only discuss adoption. They are appalled with women who get pregnant out of wedlock and then keep and raise the baby. If they really wanted to reduce abortions then they would also be talking about the expectant mother parenting the child.

But they don't want that. They want EVERY SINGLE CHILD born out of wedlock to be given up for adoption. They want a return to the Baby Scoop Era.

I know this doesn't impinge on the beautiful minds of those who deny women their bodily autonomy, but not every pregnancy has the plump, smiling, happy baby of the anti-abortion billboards. Some of those fetuses don't have a brain. Or have transposition of the great arteries? Or who otherwise fail to develop properly? The ones that risk the woman's life every day, every hour the pregnancy is prolonged?

Is there some secret line of people lining up to adopt severely handicapped or profoundly disabled newborns? Maybe we could redirect them to the thousands and thousands of already-born children in our foster care system? And leave women alone to live their lives without the snooping interference of ignorant god-botherers.

to carry babies for rich people.

Women are not incubators for the ruling class. We are human beings, with the right to make decisions for ourselves.

If we want to reproduce, we will choose to do so.

If we don't want to, no one should be able to force us to do so.

But, then, I forgot, she voluntarily gave up her agency to her "head", so a man does all that pesky thinking for her.
