Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)ask; Why?
When you are winning a contest, the last thing you want to do is to energize your opponents, so why would you want to reveal or imply that you are doing better than the other guys think on a completely meaningless exercise in vanity? Every internet poll carries only the mass of whatever electrons are dedicated to displaying on your screen contribute. They are the definition of meaningless, unless you successfully use them to tip your hand and scare the opposition into action.
If you want to win a poker hand where you have the winning cards, the best thing you can do is to convince the other players that you have nothing and run up the bet. This statement of running up the numbers on a poll is the equivalent of drawing a royal flush and making sure the other guys all know you have the winning hand.
Sparky 1
(400 posts)I think we want to energize our own, and especially help convince undecideds. Yes, there are still some of those, unbelievable as it seems. This isn't poker.
Of course, you don't have to do the polls if you don't like.
Egalitarian Thug
(12,448 posts)Democrats have been losing for so long that we've forgotten the winning strategies. I still don't see how running up the numbers on a meaningless poll might convince someone to vote for the President.
I do disagree however, that national politics isn't poker. While I'm not a gambler myself, I can't think of a better analogy for it.
