Republicans are on the brink of achieving a decades-long conservative project overturning abortion rights but some strategists worry that the party isnt ready for the political dangers of this monumental victory.
Why it matters: The GOP has the best political environment in a decade leading into the midterms and the last thing top party operatives want is for the Democratic base to become energized if the Supreme Court narrows or overturns Roe v. Wade.
As one longtime GOP political operative put it to Axios, it's one big flare-up that could derail what could be a 2010-level victory next year for the party and the movement."
"Republicans and operatives in the party, I dont think theyre ready. They better get ready before this decision comes out," the operative said.

I certainly hope it will.

(3,722 posts)Every two years there are new young voters coming online (so to speak).
These new, young, raised online voters are also sexual beings concerned for their future. They have grown up in a 'normality' that has included sexual rights and the rights of women as a concept, if not always actuality. The have grown up expecting to be able to avoid "expecting".
Seeing republican values opposed to abortion and contraception and diversity, they will not vote wrong by voting 'right'.
They will not vote for those seeking to give them the lives of their grandparents.
Perhaps I am wrong and immorality is inbred in the human condition.
I think otherwise.

For me immorality is a pontential, not a given in all humans. Unfortunately there are many who go to that way for a long time.

Because their governing philosophy stems from an authoritative perspective NOT based in evidence but in "tradition", they believe they are ordained by god to dictate social and economic practices. Progressives are often accused of trying to promulgate a "Nanny State" and maybe there are times when policies step over some boundaries, but it is typically based in some evidence. We do not think we are entitled to dictate how things run. We base policies on what the available evidence shows would lead to the best possible outcome.

If Roe is overturned, there will be major activity and Republicans will suffer losses in what should be an advantageous election cycle for them.

(26,757 posts)I'm sure that there will be some regions of the country where it hurts us as well.
Gubernatorial candidates and state legislators have been able to say "That isn't something that we have control over at the state level. It doesn't matter what I think" - That may not last much longer.

(46,756 posts)Think of all the moderate Republican women who have been holding their breath every election, voting Republicans even though they know it is causing friction with friends on the other side of the political spectrum. They know this is just going to make it impossible to heal friendships broken by the Trump era. And, they may not admit it, but, socially, they have more in common with us than foul-mouthed Trumpers.

(13,058 posts)Why? Because it robs them of an issue that gets their supporters all riled up and more likely to vote. The Republicans have been drumming up fervor from their base over this issue for many years. If Roe is overturned then they will be robbed of this issue which has been effective at getting right to lifers to support Republican candidates.

(14,322 posts)do they want power for powers sake, or power for the sake of ideology?
Now that the party is basically a Trump fan club, I think ideology is secondary, tertiary, or lower for them. They dont believe in much anymore.
Political leaders who want to remain political leaders have to see the threat posed by the dog catching the car. Theyve worked at this for decades, and now that Roe is nearly gone, they have misgivings. The rabid base wants Roe overturned, but they are a minority in the country as a whole.
Youre absolutely right that the RW has used abortion as a wedge issue to fire up voters. Take that off the table, and all they have left is taxes and a damaged twice-impeached king in exile.
If they do overturn Roe, public opinion may shift even further left on this issue, which is now about two to one in favor of choice. It will definitely galvanize our side.

(13,058 posts)would probably be a political plus for us in the long run. But we have to ask ourselves, is this possible political advantage worth the pain and suffering that such a court ruling would cause among women who would be denied a vital service? This would especially be hard on poor women who may not have the means to travel out of state to another location where abortions remain legal. I think the answer is obviously "no." So if Roe is overturned I for one will not be cheering. It will be very sad day for our country.

(1,648 posts)Providing cheap wire clothes hangers to pull the shoulders together, place a note that says 'Republican Forced Abortion Tool' on the center of it, and tie a small red cloth on the hook... Then hang them all on door knobs in Republican voting districts and especially on all Republican politicians door knobs.
Until activists force exposure of Republican's end result on issues, Republicans will continue their race to pervert everything to their delusional alternate reality. And there will be no meaningful blow-back and backlash.

(32,086 posts)Not only will they have to deal the fallout right before the election, they also lose one of their big donor causes. Anti-abortion proponents will have little reason to pour money into GOP coffers. AND, they know the Dems are going to turn this back on them over the Second Amendment. They risk massive controls over their Precious via the same arguments using to take away women's reproductive rights. The GOP dog appears to have caught the car it has been chasing for decades, and it's going to wind up like the dog I once knew who chased cars--under the tire of a big-ass pick-up truck.

This is what their base wants more of, taking rights away from those they hate or fear.

(7,737 posts)First and foremost- we have the internet now- so, no more "forbidden photos" of dead women after illegal procedures. Nope! Dead women's photos will be right there on Facebook and Instagram. INCLUDING Republican's daughters and wives. This is 2021- their photos will be splashed all over social media.
Second- abandoned babies found in bathrooms/ dumpsters- alongside the road. Get ready. Think those abandoned puppy photos are the saddest thing you have ever seen? Nope! It will be horrific.
Third- taxes are going to go sky high. How else is this "Christian" nation going to pay for all these new darlings? Oh yeah- and they aren't going to be the prom queen's kids either- get used to it.

(4,616 posts)The dog who finally caught the car. It also takes away the wedge issue for THEIR voters. Hence the reason nothing has been done about it in almost 50 years. Because they didn't really want it overturned, it was to good of an issue for the religious rubes they have been duping.
