Homeowner Fighting Snake Infestation Burns Down Maryland House: Officials

NBC4 Washington
By Sophia Barnes

A homeowner burned down their house in Montgomery County, Maryland, while trying to chase off snakes, officials say.

The homeowner tried to use smoke to fight a snake infestation in a home on Big Woods Road near Poolesville, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said.

Hot coals got too close to flammable materials and caught fire. About 75 firefighters responded at 10 p.m. Tuesday, Piringer said.

The fire spread from the basement and consumed the home, causing more than $1 million in damage, officials say. Photos show flames shooting from the roof and second-story windows.

Confirms We Will Never Sit on the Pot Again.

Maybe the Maryland guy read this story and got scared.

Stop. Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Exhale. Now think about the worst day you’ve ever had. Then multiply that day by a billion and yours might be comparable to the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day had by a 47-year-old Dutchman vacationing in South Africa. How bad was his day you ask? Well, he got bitten on the balls by a snake while trying to pinch a loaf that resulted in a case of “scrotal necrosis,” which is even worse than it sounds.

According to Urology Case Reports a snouted cobra—was sitting inside the toilet bowl when the man sat down and the rest is… history. Of course, after being bitten on the balls, the man was forced to wait three hours before a helicopter could transport him to a trauma center over 200 miles away.

While waiting the man, “felt a burning sensation in his genitals and a pain that ascended through his groin to his flank, upper chest, and abdomen. He also reported vomiting but no neurological symptoms,” the journal also explained.

Adding, “His penis and scrotum were noted to be swollen, deep purple in color, and painful on hospital admission.”

After being diagnosed with scrotal necrosis, he received eight doses of snake venom antiserum and tetanus prophylaxis. Which definitely does not sound good. The moral of this story… always flush before you go because you never know what’s going to reach out and bite your balls.

They have semi-regular stories of some idiot using some form of fire to rid their residence of unwanted creatures. Last week, it was a guy who used a blow torch to burn off cob webs, while trying to quell a spider infestation, and wound up burning down his mother's house.
