And yes, some of the funding and projects are more political than make scientific sense.
So yes, there are idiots involves with NASA.

(38,313 posts)... and a useless waste of resources.
Any science we decide to do in space, beyond the protection of Earth's magnetic field, can be accomplished with robots. Robots don't need heavy life support systems.
Natural born humans will never have a significant presence in space -- not on the Moon, not on Mars, not in the asteroid belt. We're too damned fragile.
If this civilization survives then our solar system will be explored by our intellectual offspring. These engineered beings, mechanical or biological, will be able to survive high radiation levels, temperature extremes, and the vacuum of space. They'll be able to run naked on the surface of Mars. Their space ships won't require air locks. They won't need food, they'll get their energy from the sun or nuclear power.
Maybe if we are good parents they'll take a few of us along for the ride.
So yeah, I have some disagreements with NASA. If I was a powerful politician or an amoral megalomaniac I'd be funding research in robotics and artificial intelligence.
And if somebody gave me a Tesla I'd give it away like a hot potato.
I don't think Elon Musk is doing anything that will save the world.

(4,395 posts)but I am on the autistic spectrum and I do find that some of the posts on Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg's appearance and mannerisms (which are typical of people on the spectrum) start to cross the line into bullying and ableism.
Speaking robotically and not conforming to conventional expectations about fashion or appearance are really the least of either of their faults. Those are characteristics shared by tens of thousands of other people who were also born that way.
What you are saying to those tens of thousands of people when you say Musk or Zuckerberg's distinctive way of acting or dressing makes them look like a supervillain is that the way many other people can't really help looking and acting is not acceptable and reads as evil and anti-social. And that's kind of a shitty thing to do to people who are already marginalized by society for harmless but unusual behavior and taste.

(27,120 posts)Musk or Zuckerberg for their mannerisms or fashion choices.
I despise them for the amoral, sociopathic choices and behavior they engage in.

(8,436 posts)I don't find either Zuckerberg or Musk harmless. Using one's autism as an excuse to be an insufferable asshole is getting really tired.
meadowlander
(4,395 posts)but the point is that it isn't their hair or clothes or way of speaking that is causing harm. And when you go after them for those things (as opposed to the actually harmful things they do) you also go after other people who share those characteristics but have never hurt anyone.
