Desantis wants to create his own palace guard which he alone controls.

https://www.rawstory.com/what-wannabe-totalitarian-fascist-dictators-do-alarm-over-desantis-move-to-form-his-own-personal-militia/

Critics are responding with alarm to news Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis is asking for millions of taxpayer funds to create his own militia force, separate from the existing National Guard.

If a Democratic governor tried to do this the Republicans would be raising holy hell.

Maybe they'll do to him what they did to Caligula. Death Sentence is about as nuts as he was.

"The Michigan Volunteer Defense Force (MIVDF) is a military force, duly constituted as a state defense force and an element of Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The MIVDF is one of the three components of the military establishment of Michigan: the Army National Guard, the Air National Guard, and the Michigan Volunteer Defense Force.[1]"

It's one of the largest State Defense Forces in the country if I remember correctly. Solely under the command of the Governor of California.

including NYS, California have state militas. In NYS it is basically a reserve guard, called up in times of emergency, when the NG may be otherwise occupied, or to supplement the NG. Superstorm Sandy, Sept 11, and during the early stages of the COVID19 pandemic are examples of when they were called up.

DeSantis having one at his disposal is scary though.

Plus I thought the GOP was all about eliminating unneeded spending. This certainly would fall under unneeded.

Florida already has the laws in place for it, they just have been inactive with no funding.
