I won't share that Massie gun fetish tweet, but I will say that the right is trying not only to normalize, but to glorify violence as a political tool. Tweeting "Santa, please bring ammo" immediately after a would-be school shooter gets identified EXPRESSLY because he was...
caught searching for ammo on his phone in class isn't an accident, it's an intentional strategy to bombard us with violence until it's no longer shocking-- until it's normalized. Republicans applaud the insurrectionists as freedom warriors, they applaud Rittenhouse as a hero...
they applaud Ashli Babbitt as a martyr, they applaud Lauren Boebert's open Islamophobia even though it puts @IlhanMN's life at risk. This is a strategy to convince their supporters that violence is acceptable. And just like they resorted to violence after the Big Lie of 2020,
this is clearly part of a coordinated campaign to do it again in 2022 & 2024 if they lose. That's why ALL of this is coupled with more bogus election "audits," more stolen election rhetoric, more "voter integrity" laws, more purging of nonpartisan officials. It goes hand in hand.
Pretending like this is no big deal or burying our heads in the sand won't do anything to lower the temperature; it'll only leave us unprepared when more violence is inevitably born out of this. Willful ignorance is doing nothing to curb a trend that is boiling over on the right.
The media needs to stop pretending this is politics as usual, and the non-lunatic Republicans need to start putting the future of this country above their fear of a mean Trump press release. Or we'll look back at this moment wondering why we didn't step up when we had the chance.

(70,585 posts)... the military, or special duty security needs that kind of crap. I think the AK or AR the woman next to the
Xmas tree can fire a round that tumbles after it hits somebody which can cause so much shock and trauma
that you can die no matter where the round hits you.
Those people are sick. Odds are very good somebody in that picture will get shot or shoot somebody they know.
This is a pump action shotgun with a deer "slug tube" that can be used for hunting and if need be for home defense.
They last forever, they make a sound when you rack a shell that every thug knows means business, by OH
law you can only carry them with "a plug" in them that limits you to 3 shells, and you really don't have to be
accurate with them for home defense (which almost never happens).

(4,131 posts)A shotgun is one of the worst choices for home defense. My guess is you'll hear only *crickets* from him.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)"Not very far" is not an answer. The answer is that a standard 'defense' load of double-aught buck will spread about to about 1 inch to 1.5 inches at 10 feet and to about 2 to 2.5 inches at 30 feet.
The idea that the need to aim is reduced or eliminated with a shotgun is absolutely idiotic. Anyone who advocates for or practices such nonsense has no business owning or using a firearm.
Shotguns are a poor choice for home defense.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)about in their paranoia and gunner lore.
A shotgun is more than 99.999% of people will ever need. In fact, a pea-shooter is too.
Stop telling people they need to be armed to the teeth like you and Hero, when its paranoid, irresponsible gunner BS.
PTWB
(4,131 posts)It sure seems like you fantasize about guns and gun owners in every gun related thread! I'm definitely not judging you for the cringe cutsey pet names you bestow upon the targets of said fantasies. (Not much, anyway!)
That said, some of the misinformation you've been posting is dangerous.
One of the golden rules of gun safety is to know what is directly behind your target and beyond. Do you have X-Ray vision?
Shotguns are a poor choice for home defense because they are more dangerous than dedicated home defense weapons with dedicated home defense ammunition. If you shoot buckshot (or god forbid, a slug) at your target it is going to pass through your target, through several walls (and anything in between those walls), and could easily travel into the neighbor's house and through some of their walls. That's simply not acceptable and your advocation of such is irresponsible.
High quality ammunition designed not to over penetrate is an infinitely better choice for home defense. You can get such ammunition in numerous calibers and for numerous platforms, including your standard pistols and AR.
In addition, you're supporting a claim that shotguns require little aim to be effective, despite being admonished from people who actually are familiar with the subject that said claim is both incorrect and incredibly dangerous.
Surely you don't want to post and advocate for dangerous misinformation, right?

(54,770 posts)about gunz, probably derived from years of needing to strap on a gun or two, and maybe body-armor, to walk down the street, and Hero-Wannabism is obvious too. Plus, you hang with gunners.
For those reasons, I really dont care what your opinions are about gunz, including your perspective on which gun is best for every possible application in the world of Gungeoneer fear.. Further, the odds of needing a gun is virtually zero for the vast majority of people.

As for my username, I have at this point lost track of how many times I've told you that it's based on a silly 1960's comic book. One would think you would have remembered by now.
Regarding opinions about firearms, I'll hold up my knowledge against yours any day, although I will grant that you do have the life experience of being (by your own admission) a former robber....

(70,585 posts)Stuff:
The # of cases of people who need to defend their home against somebody breaking in is really small.
I have long sense given up the idea that I could get to my shotgun, get it out of its case, load it,
and get the drop on the bad guy. I would never keep a loaded gun in my house. I had a son in my house
and now a granddaughter who spends time here. BTW I have 100 lb dog and a baseball bat.
If you own a gun and that gun is fired in anger it is something like > 85% of the time that it
will be used on you or somebody you know.
And yes, you really don't have to be that accurate w/a shot gun. I was told by a friend who was a SWAT officer
that a shotgun is the go to home defense weapon.
Although after Sandy Hook my interest in hunting and shooting has fallen way off.

(19,271 posts)They've all transitioned to AR's and 9mm carbines.
They figured out years ago that shotguns aren't great for indoor shooting scenarios, and adopted better tech. Small mag capacity, excessive muzzle blast, slow to reload, heavy recoil all make a shotgun a poor choice for home defense IMO.

(790 posts)Very rarely, if ever, is the issue of guns in America examined in the context of mental health. More Americans kill themselves with guns than by any other method. More Americans take their own life with guns then there are Americans murdered by guns. Below is useful information regarding suicide, published by the Wyoming health department. It's one of the more comprehensive info sheets on suicide that I've seen. And that may be because Wyoming has a high suicide rate. Suicide is an exponential problem because -- as the Wyoming fact sheet articulates: "Surviving the loss of a loved one to suicide is a risk factor for suicide. Studies estimate that for every one suicide, there is anywhere from 6 to 32 people left as suicide survivors, which most studies agree is an underestimate."

Guns and Suicide: The Hidden Toll
https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/magazine/magazine_article/guns-suicide/
Far more people (in the United States) kill themselves with a firearm each year than are murdered with one. In 2010 in the U.S., 19,392 people committed suicide with guns, compared with 11,078 who were killed by others.
