(4,104 posts)To say it was spot on was an understatement. It was downright lethal.

(11,738 posts)The difference between the Republican Party of the 1980's and now is basically that they have stopped using the thin veneer of "civility". This is the same Republican Party that was okay with Reagan going behind Carter's back with Iran (a known state sponsor of terror) to undermine Carter's presidency. They were fine with waging dirty wars all across Central America and selling arms to Iran. The mask started slipping in the 1990's and 2000's when Gingrich, Hastert, and De Lay started calling Democrats the enemy and going scorched earth.
Dole is a throwback to a time when the Republicans were still trying to put on a "good face"... nothing more.

(11,738 posts)The Nixon administration was a veritable gold mine for the worst people in Conservative politics.
When Reagan was ready to assume the mantle, Poppy Bush (no saint either) was horrified and wanted to defend the vestiges of "Great State Republicanism" from the barbarian Reagan.

(11,738 posts)There were definitely people within the Republican Party who were more articulate and seemed to understand history and politics. I bet the Dole could probably define Communism, unlike most of the Party today.

(4,197 posts)I wonder if they were born in the 1740s or something. The Republican party has been this way I since can remember (born in 66). They just get to say it out loud now.

(62,530 posts)Former Kansas senator and 1996 Republican nominee Bob Dole endorsed Donald Trump for president on Friday, calling for the GOP to unite around Trump in order to defeat Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee.
Doles support gives the GOP presumptive nominee the support of another party elder on a day when other top Republicans announced their opposition. Trump inconspicuously announced the endorsement earlier on Friday at a rally in Omaha, Nebraska, as he ticked off the names of several prominent Republicans who have come around to his candidacy since he became the partys presumptive nominee earlier this week.
The voters of our country have turned out in record numbers to support Mr. Trump. It is important that their votes be honored and it is time that we support the partys presumptive nominee, Donald J. Trump, Dole said in a statement released by Trumps campaign. I plan to attend the RNC convention in Cleveland to show my support for our party and our ticket, as I have done my entire life. We must unite as a party to defeat Hillary Clinton.
In the same statement, Trump thanked Dole and said he is a wonderful man and it is a great honor to have his support.
