A standoff with a man barricaded in a freezer at a Fort Myers McDonald's on Saturday ended peacefully.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said the suspect was being taken to a hospital to be checked out but that he didn’t appear injured other than being teargassed.

According Marceno, Fort Myers police encountered an armed person who shot at officers and then retreated into the McDonald’s on Palm Beach Boulevard at about 11 a.m. McDonald’s was full of employees but the sheriff's office safety evacuated everyone.

Onlookers were nearby, across the street, as the sheriff's office and a SWAT team surrounded the McDonald's announcing their presence and demanding the suspect come out with his hands up. A loud bang was heard and a puff of smoke was seen as deputies sent tear gas into the McDonald's.

As you can hear from the voices, there’s a lot of Hispanic folks in that area. I drive past that McDonalds a couple of times a week but I think this happened a while ago. Still..the children. Their mothers and other innocents having to live thru this and it just doesn’t stop. This is a quiet part of town..usually.
