Nearly 70 ICU Nurses, Doctors Test Positive for COVID After Christmas Party

https://www.thedailybeast.com/68-icu-nurses-doctors-at-spanish-hospital-test-positive-for-covid-19-after-christmas-party

When dozens of Spanish nurses and doctors gathered to celebrate the holiday season earlier this month, they probably didn’t intend to spread anything more than Christmas cheer. But 68 of the 173 intensive care nurses and doctors attending a Dec. 1 Christmas party came away positive for the coronavirus, according to Spanish authorities. The University Regional Hospital in Malaga nurses and doctors are now isolating, health officials said Monday. All who contracted COVID-19 had had antigen tests or booster vaccinations and are showing only mild symptoms. A spokesperson suggested the source of the viral spread might alternatively have been a large holiday meal that had been hosted for the hospital’s staff. Andalusian authorities have recommended other public and private hospital staff steer clear of Christmas parties for the foreseeable future, as Spain identified its seventh case of the virus’ Omicron variant on Monday.

A statement from SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras shed a bit more light on that party, saying it was a Halloween party involving medical residents. The statement reads:

“It’s deeply disappointing that while the overwhelming majority of our students, faculty, and staff are doing the right thing to protect each other from the spread of COVID on campus and in the community that 36 employees at Upstate Medical—medical residents pursuing a career to safeguard the health of others—are in mandatory quarantine due to their reckless and irresponsible actions to have a Halloween party off campus. One has tested positive and we all know too well it just takes one person to infect others when in close proximity and not wearing masks. Hopefully, this is a lesson learned that we must continue to take extraordinary precaution to keep this virus at bay. I support President Dr. Dewan taking all necessary disciplinary measures to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Some future doctors are not the brightest bulbs in the bunch.

Those two things have literally NOTHING to do with each other. It's like saying everyone who suffered a broken femur that night had either x-rays or well-fitting pants. It makes no sense.

Spain rules out mandatory vaccination as coronavirus incidence jumps 17 points

Catalonia has confirmed two infections of the omicron variant, and is registering high demand for vaccines as ‘Covid passport’ comes into force

https://english.elpais.com/society/2021-12-03/spain-rules-out-mandatory-vaccination-as-coronavirus-incidence-jumps-17-points.html

Spain’s Health Ministry reported 14,500 new coronavirus infections and added 42 Covid-19 related fatalities to the overall death toll on Thursday evening. In its latest report on the pandemic, the ministry also communicated a further rise in the cumulative incidence of infections over the previous 14 days. That data point, which has been steadily rising for several weeks now, shot up another 17 points to 234 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

In terms of the country’s regions, Navarre in northern Spain continues to top the table, with a cumulative incidence of 676 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the previous 14 days. Next is the neighbouring Basque Country, with 552, followed by Aragón, with 435. According to Thursday’s report, the incidence rose in all territories, apart from Castilla-La Mancha, and in all age groups – in particular among the under-12s, who are yet to be vaccinated.

As for the pressure on Spain’s hospitals, the ministry report detailed 4,093 patients currently being treated for Covid-19, 136 more than the day before. This rise is mirrored in the numbers for intensive care units (ICUs), where the occupation rate rose three-tenths of a point in yesterday’s report to 8.4% of the total.

According to the data supplied by the Health Ministry, unvaccinated people aged between 60 and 80 have 14 times more risk of death from Covid-19 than the vaccinated, and 23 times more risk of ending up in the ICU. In total, 5,189,220 coronavirus infections have been officially recorded since the pandemic began, and 88,122 have died after contracting the virus.

Like all in the current pandemic spotlight, they should be setting the good example instead of acting fool. Shame on them, and now Spain has fewer medical personnel to respond to the crisis.

It's not one bit funny but I wonder how many unintended pregnancies were another result of the big hangover....
