I'm vaxxed x3 and not high risk, and I don't have to mingle with people often. So yeah, masks actually ARE fun. Having to pick one out means I'm getting out of the house / home office for a change.

(3,635 posts)which is still NYC despite being right leaning. A centrist Dem candidate can win there without being such a tool.
All Rose's FoxNews talking points do is suppress Dem turnout, since Dems in SI are ideologically the same as anywhere else in the boroughs, ie working class liberals who would be put off by the type of attacks/positions Rose takes.
Let Rose try that crap with Eric Adams, he would floor him.

Rose: I Have Zero Allegiance To Dems, Support Trump
https://shorefrontnews.com/2020/10/06/max-rose-i-have-zero-allegiance-to-dems-support-trump/
Rose was one of the last Democratic holdouts during impeachment, going so far as to pen an op-ed in opposition to it. Yet, he proved not strong enough to stand up to his party leadership even when it was obviously against his interest to impeach the President. Had Rose taken a stance and voted against impeachment, he wouldve been a shoe-in today. He didnt, choosing instead to go on MSNBC to attack the Presidents very clear obstruction and now despite being an incumbent, he finds himself in the position of an underdog trying to claw back.
Rose repeatedly issued statements in support of Trump and attended his events, followed by press releases that made him sound like the Presidents fan boy. Shortly after voting to impeach him, Rose attacked his Republican opponent Nicole Malliotakis for not supporting Trump. The President responded with an endorsement of Malliotakis and a public attack on Congressman Rose that called for his ouster.

Roses independent streak would be tested, less than a month later, by the unfolding Ukraine scandal. It shouldnt be something that anyone wants to do, he told me Thursday afternoon, explaining why he decided to reverse course and support an impeachment inquiry. Its also a dangerous choice, for a representative whose district went for Trump by 10 points in 2016, and Rose didnt come to a conclusion lightly. I think you know by now that Im a pretty decisive person.
Decisivenessor perhaps more accurately, bluntnessis indeed one of Roses more winsome qualities. In the eight hours that I traveled with him around Staten Island last month, I got to see firsthand how Rose charmed the borough: engaging in spirited debate with Republicans at a picnic, calling for a ban on assault weapons in a church, slamming the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committees poll-tested bullshit, laying into fellow New Yorker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezs Green New Deal as a socialist lie and, awkwardly, joining a Zumba class on the FDR Boardwalk. At just five-foot-six, he doesnt cut a towering figure. But he is a pit bull of a man, emanating a no-holds-barred attitude. A former Army platoon leader who was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service in Afghanistan, the freshman Democrat lacks all pretense.
Rep. Max Rose: Why I oppose Trump impeachment
https://www.silive.com/news/2019/09/rep-max-rose-why-i-oppose-trump-impeachment.html
By Max Rose
Republicans across the country ran on a proactive agenda in 2016: To drain the swamp, rebuild our roads and bridges, and protect Social Security and Medicare. What they did instead was pass a trillion-dollar tax cut for the very companies that created the opioid epidemic. I fear the Democratic Party is now at risk of repeating a similar bait-and-switch mistake by focusing on impeachment instead of infrastructure, healthcare costs, and putting people to work with livable wages and benefits.
Let me be clear, we have made real progress this year, including permanently extending and fully funding the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, passing the most sweeping anti-corruption legislation in a generation, and bipartisan gun safety reforms.
But theres far too much work left to be done and we are in danger of losing the trust of the American people if we choose partisan warfare over improving the lives of hardworking families. I made a promise to my constituents to focus on making their lives better, and I wont break it.
Max Rose to Run for House, Seeking a Rematch Against Malliotakis
Mr. Rose, a moderate Democrat, lost to Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican, by six percentage points last year in a conservative New York City district that includes Staten Island.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/06/nyregion/max-rose-congress-malliotakis.html
The race for New Yorks 11th Congressional District, currently held by Representative Nicole Malliotakis, a Republican, could be one of the most competitive in the metropolitan area next year, along with possible races on Long Island.
Depending on the contours of the district which now includes Staten Island and a slice of south Brooklyn following the redistricting process, the contest may also represent one of the Democrats more promising pickup opportunities. The party is straining to maintain its congressional majorities heading into a grueling midterm campaign environment, and a number of Democratic incumbents have decided to retire.
The race may also offer a revealing snapshot of how Democrats in key battlegrounds choose to position themselves, after the Republican Party gained ground over the last year by portraying Democratic candidates as anti-law enforcement.

(59,504 posts)If not, what is the point of getting angry that he is attacking De Blasio, who will soon be an out going mayor who has weak approval numbers in NYC - and poor numbers in Staten Island. It is almost always hyperbole to claim someone is the worst - and NYC has had worse mayors, but this seems simply a way to eliminate an albatross that Republicans will try to put around his neck.
I assume the GIST of what he is attempting to say is judge me for who I AM, not whether you like Democrats. He has a record of positions that are conservative for a Democrat. No one is asking you to back him, give him contributions or volunteer for him. I would guess that even if you lived in his district, that would be a ridiculous ask. However, what if his old seat becomes that seat that determines if a Democrat or a Republican is the speaker?
When Max Rose won in 2018, it was considered an upset. He was never going to be liked on a progressive board. However, if the ONLY vote we like is who he votes for as speaker, that alone is worth hoping he wins.
As to harming other Democrats by taking positions - like being against mask mandates, which IS different from being against wearing masks - he does not have the visibility to "hurt" other Democrats on this.
lapucelle
(18,268 posts)Its solidly red. Max Rose is exactly the type of Democrat who stands a chance of getting elected there. Losing that seat was heartbreaking.

In addition , on 538, Nate Silver calculated that, based on his district's voting demographics, would be expected to vote with Trump's agenda 62% of the time. He voted with the Republicans 9% of the time.

(35,454 posts)Because he has a tendency to smack on DEms like Nancy P.... and while Staten Island is not the land of the Dems he needed everyone he could get. And though I don't live on ST there were aspects of his last campaign ads and interviews that I found annoying and if he had been my rep I would've still voted for him but others may not have done so.
lapucelle
(18,268 posts)although he did announce that he would not vote for her as Speaker if elected. My own representative (Kathleen Rice) has made similar statements calling for new leadership.
Max Rose did need every vote he could get. On SI that involves winning over Republican leaning independents and registered Republicans. Staten Island Democrats are aware of the challenges of winning elections in that district, and Max Rose (like Kathleen Rice in my district and Tom Suozzi in a neighboring district) is the type of Democrat who is electable there.
As for his being "annoying", shame on any Democrat in that district who withheld a vote from him. They know what's at stake.
