The University of Florida campus in Gainesville. UF faculty allege in a new report that UF researchers working with COVID-19 data felt pressure to destroy the data and were told not to criticize Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
MIAMI HERALD Fear of upsetting state officials is pervasive among faculty at the University of Florida, to the point that race-related references have been edited out of course materials and researchers felt pressure to destroy COVID-19 data, according to a report released Monday by a Faculty Senate committee.
The six-person panel was convened three weeks ago to investigate academic freedom issues after the university decided to bar three political science professors from testifying in a lawsuit against the state.
But its findings go well beyond that episode and were so disturbing especially regarding COVID-19 research that the group decided to speed up its work, said Danaya Wright, a constitutional law professor and former Faculty Senate chairperson who served on the committee. (7,365 posts)Of Fascist dictatorships is to control the media, the arts and intelligentsia. These 3 institutions have been under a vicious attack for decades from the right. Actors, musicians, scientists, scholars, journalists are PE#1 in a fascist state. You either placate the state or you will be persecuted. The right knows academia and the arts especially are incubators for IDEAS and sometimes those IDEAS make people think a different way than the ruling class would choose. Thus, they must be stamped out.
So me what is happening in Florida is fascism, but it's also criminal to hide information that could save human lives.

(36,828 posts)The statement "To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize" was falsely attributed to Voltaire, the French Enlightenment philosopher. However, the phrase is believed to originate from an essay by Strom first published in 1993: "All America Must Know the Terror that is Upon Us".
