1 big thing: Women politicians under siege

Women in Congress feel besieged and singled-out amid surging threats against lawmakers at all levels, with some frustrated more hasn't been done to halt the trend, Axios' Sophia Cai and Andrew Solender write.

Why it matters: As record numbers of American women are being elected to public office, their growing political power is being met with death and rape threats, sexist and racist abuse and online disinformation. Collectively, it’s discouraged women from running for office.

The recent salvos against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) are just the latest example.

The district office of Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) was burglarized and vandalized last week— an incident she condemned with the support of Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.).

I currently maintain on-going contact with two members of the House -- and neither are from my district, currently misrepresented by Claudia Tenney. I have high opinions of AOC and Ilhan Omar, and know that they were the target of a high level of threats since taking offic. And it increases when the republicans use dog whistles and bull horns.

In general, I think for every dozen idiots who make these threats, there is one thinking it, but not expressing it. The republicans are encouraging the dozens to discourage these female Democrats in Congress (or state or local offices). Some of them respond by break-ins, etc. But together, these republicans are speaking to that silent, unstable fellow who neighbors would describe as a quiet man who kept to himself.

AOC as well as The Squad were a target of a massive online disinformation campaign since at least December of last year and this isn’t counting the kind she gets from the right.

Ilhan Omar and AOC seem to receive hate the most.

scare insecure men. I don't think it is entirely racial -- intelligent white females in leadership positions & roles have endured similar toxic reactions. Gabby Giffords' case is a prime example of what calls to the unstable can do.But it does seem that AOC and Omar get a lot of hatred from inadequate white men. Just my opinion.

What is not merely my opinion is that we will continue to see an increase in the numbers of intelligent female leaders elected to office, and they will all be Democrats.

I'm glad that you posted this OP. It's something that I've been thinking about a lot lately.

"American women are being elected to public office, their growing political power is being met with death and rape threats, sexist and racist abuse and online disinformation."
Pelosi, Hillary, Feinstein, VP Harris, Shontel Brown, & every Democratic woman in your mission to replace them all.

You are hardly the 1st to be treated as you claim. The time clock of female victimization didn't begin with you.

Odd they should rally , what they stayed silent on, when Democratic women candidates & politicians were being mocked, vilified, & debased, for their sexuality, their age, their clothes, shoes, hair, voice, intellect and then degraded for their long lifeswork on behalf of women around the world, to smallest of communities.

There was not one word spoken by either of these 2, to stand up for fellow political women & condemn the relentless debasing of the women their own campaigns targeted.

The hypocrisy & spin is so thick in this article it shouldn't even belong here.

Perhaps, rather try owning the way their own base treated other women in the past & how they are treated still today.
They can certainly use their position to right those wrongs, in order to lend a serious change in what they expect & demand from the behavior of their own base towards women.

You get what you give. Start within your own constituents & base of supporters before pointing to others.

Maybe demand the change in behavior towards your fellow female gendered, via the same social media you used & allowed to condemn & degrade, mock & grind to the dirt, to simply raise your own profile above theirs.

Maybe start by owning the degradation of other female professionals by your very own supporters.

Start there, because that fault lies squarely on your own shoulders to correct, apologise & make right.

You stay sient while your entire campaign is allowed to victimize women, mercilessly.
You say nothing when that victimization & degradation of women benefits your own agenda.

Start with your own culpability.
Clean up your own 1st before demanding it from someone else.

The massive online disinformation campaign I was referring to targeted the left. I even spotted some Russian state owned media accounts targeting her which tells me Russia doesn’t like her probably because she supports NATO. Both were elected after Hillary Clinton and AOC called out some of the stuff Warren received when Sanders supporters were harsh.

Once.
That's pathetic.

They allowed their base to drag every female Dem leader. They said nothing.
Maybe some just missed the last 5 years of that.
