(26,754 posts)Except of course the CBO estimated the cost of the defense budget. There were no calls because nobody would have voted on it without one - its a normal part of the process.

(6,838 posts)What's with the beat up Reich stuff? He's pretty well right every time. Does that make him unacceptable?

(6,838 posts)My response was to the general tenor of what I was reading in the reaction of some responders to the OP. Sorry, I just stuck it onto your post for logical placement. But since I got you here. I think Reich has offered reasonable commentary presented in a media savvy fashion for decades. There are here at DU some who have real experience with the inner workings of the federal government. There may also be some troll types who pretend to understand and thus wittingly or not confuse others. Reich spent real time in the White House. That gives him rank in my book.

The CBO score was ordered on September 2, the CBO documents were available to representatives on September 7, and then available to the public on September 10.
The House voted on and passed the bill on September 23.

(16,287 posts)Plenty of taxpayers money for things even the Services dont want or need but, Hey! No money for child care, infrastructure, medicines n on n on. I kinda wish I had not clicked on..now my jaw is tight. Rag all ya want about Mr Reich..he served in the Clinton administration..Secretary of Labor..but that adm was the only one in modern history to have a balanced budget at the end of the tenure. I should think he has some knowledge of what he speaks. Imo..

(7,629 posts)America's bloated military budgets displace the spending needed to improve civilian lives. It is a national disgrace. Reich screws up this message when he brings in the lack of attention paid to the CBO score report (there was one). To my understanding, CBO reports only evaluate spending bills in relation to current law. If current law mandates catastrophically wasteful spending, a CBO score still proceeds from the assumption that current spending is reasonable- because it's the law...
