...in the conspiracy to over-throw an election and perpetrate a coup upon the government of the United States.
It is becoming more obvious that there were several people behind the "plan". We now see that former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was very instrumental in carrying out the conspiracy. Along with Steve Bannon, John Eastman, Jeffrey Clark, Rudy Guiliani, and a few others, that conspired with Donald Trump to keep him in power.
In effect, they created "election fraud" by lying about election fraud. The only fraud that was discovered was the fraud they committed on the American people. The "Big Lie" was the fraud.
It is very tough to prove sedition or conspiracy against the government if everyone refuses to talk.
Also, it is a huge challenge for the Justice Department to charge and prosecute. But, for the sake of our country and our democracy, they must.
The Select Committee is doing the best they can do under the circumstances.
However, if the most they can come up with for this heinous crime against our country is "contempt of Congress", it is not much more than a cover-up for the real crimes.
Justice is the duty of the FBI and the DOJ. They must pull their heads out of the sand and get serious about holding people accountable for attacking our Capitol and threatening the lives of our elected Representatives. Otherwise, they are of little use to the present government.
In the end, it is not a problem of the Democratic Party. It is a problem for the American people. If Democrats and Republicans cannot agree to come together as Americans and protect this nation from such an assault, then we are lost.
We must fight this battle together, as Americans.

I understand that unraveling this knot of conspiracy is a complex process, but bold action is the only real hope we have to prevent the ongoing coup attempt.

Unfortunately, again we seem to be the underdogs. We, the American people, need to see equal and fair justice delivered to all, and although in some cases we may not like the outcome, at least we need to know that justice is working. At this point, justice seems suspect.

I can just see it and it so maddening.
All because decent people don't put out things with great histrionics and dumbassery, which the media loves.

(111,106 posts)It can only give you what has been put into it.
They want to be "manipulated". They want to be fed information.
Democrats have become dependent upon the media to tell the story when they do not have the story to tell. The Democrats must give them the story daily.
Feed the beast.

(3,401 posts)it is the republican party the perpetrator, it is the republican party who has been kidnapped by a very corrupt man and most probably foreign agents like Putin, Saudi Arabia, etc.
Like you point out, it is the job of the CIA, FBI and DOJ to put these traitors behind bars, otherwise they become part of the problem as well as complicit to the treason, and thus traitors themselves.
At this time I have very little confidence in the military, some of the brass seem to be OK with what happened Jan 6, 2020 and maybe even been be part of it. When we loose the military to a fascist movement that is when things get really bad, we need a real patriot to out the traitors, and they need to be made accountable for their treason.

(111,106 posts)There are many.
But they need to be informed. They need to know what is at stake. They need to hear another side of the story. It is their country, too.
I am of the opinion that if the Republican "patriots" join forces with the Democrats, then they can beat the fascists at the polls. Otherwise, it is a throw of the dice.

(43,235 posts)I'd bet it's more than a dozen or so at the top. A network that sought help from below. I'd bet 50 to 100 people to organize, finance, brainstorm. Logistics. Coordination. Creating dissheveled chaos to carry out the Plan.
The OP is correct, you don't want the Rule of Law to appear to be politicized in an unprovable conspiracy. That can rebound later and be used against you. But I do think the best legal minds in the country are on this daily. It will be a few, and timely, points of law that are prosecuted. Choke points if you will. It's barely sufficient. But there are sink holes in a wider strategy.

(527 posts)Just look back, after the Nixon administration who has gotten punished(?) only the lower peons. The "low hanging fruit is who is punished to make it seem like they are doing something. The leaders and the rich pay for all the wrongs to be done and never pay the price. If you don't believe it then why did President Obama give full immunity to the Bush Administration and never pardoned the peons that were sent to jail.
The people who helped put on the Jan 6 attempted coupe are the 1 percenters who financed it all. If it would have worked they would have exonerate financial hopes while they drained the Government/us. They are never happy with the huge tax breaks, being given billions for nothing, allowed to have tax havens to hide their assets, or even get paid when they move their companies oversees. GREED has no end and they are the ones who financed the coupe and will never pay any price for their treason.

Gave me hope.

(6,598 posts)719 people have been charged in the Capitol insurrection so far. This searchable table shows them all.
[link:https://www.insider.com/all-the-us-capitol-pro-trump-riot-arrests-charges-names-2021-1|]
If a bunch of these folks say they did it because they believed Politicians X Y & Z wanted them to do it, that may be a basis for cases against Politicians X Y & Z. If there are going to charges against X Y & Z it seems like having this testimony from those 719 (& counting) would make for stronger cases & increase the likelihood of successful prosecutions of X Y & Z.
Just my thoughts, of course.

(6,193 posts)when Congress voted to accept the Electoral College results that clearly elected Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice-president.
The "Stop the Steal" campaign was always the attempt to steal the election.
We see that more and more each day as the January 6th committee delves deeper and deeper into the Republican plot to overturn the Republic.
It's ironic that Republicans are the ones trying to overturn the Republic. Perhaps they could re-name their party to the Insurrectionist Party. But then they aren't really into being the party of truth. They are the party of lies, deception, and autocratic rule.
So, it would actually be most accurate if they just admitted they're the Trumpist Party.
That says it all.

(42,770 posts)behind the guise of (1) planning a rally, and (2) hopefully influencing states to change their mind. Stinks to high heaven but it was their plan all along. To hide behind legal events.
So unless the committee or the FBI has received real proof like an email, text, or a taped recording of someone literally instructing people to kill, kidnap, or hang anyone or to hold governmental participants in hostage, I think it would be very difficult to prosecute. Doubt that these types of people leave proof
