In Pittsburgh, Memphis and Los Angeles, massive billboards recently popped up declaring, Birds Arent Real.
On Instagram and TikTok, Birds Arent Real accounts have racked up hundreds of thousands of followers, and YouTube videos about it have gone viral.
Last month, Birds Arent Real adherents even protested outside Twitters headquarters in San Francisco to demand that the company change its bird logo.
The events were all connected by a Gen Z-fueled conspiracy theory, which posits that birds dont exist and are really drone replicas installed by the U.S. government to spy on Americans. Hundreds of thousands of young people have joined the movement, wearing Birds Arent Real T-shirts, swarming rallies and spreading the slogan.

Apparently, it's a conspiracy theory satire
But there's probably something to it. I think the CIA drone idea is a good one
And here's all you need to know:

Best part - they grew up with me dragging them all over to watch birds. When I tell them I saw a bird that shouldn't have been in the area, they remind me the GPS chip must have glitched. Or if a bird lingers too long at the feeder, they remind me it's recharging is power cell.
It's silly and most know it. It isn't anything like the QAnuts.

(43,461 posts)What Birds Arent Real truly is, they say, is a parody social movement with a purpose. In a post-truth world dominated by online conspiracy theories, young people have coalesced around the effort to thumb their nose at, fight and poke fun at misinformation. Its Gen Zs attempt to upend the rabbit hole with absurdism.

All of the birds died in 1986 due to Reagan killing them and replacing them with spies that are now watching us," says then-MU senior Kendrick Smith in the TikTok that would later go viral. "The birds work for the bourgeoisie."
Video is at link with his megaphone
Then it went viral joke and the guy running with it now took off big with interviews
(which are hilarious because the interviewers dont know what to do with him or the theory) and related products
Billboards tshirts stickers
If you are alarmed or concerned you are part of the joke
