Yellen: U.S. Best For Dirty Money

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the U.S. must fight money-laundering and tax evasion at home if it wants to promote anti-corruption efforts throughout the world.

"The United States cannot be a credible voice for free and fair government abroad if, at the same time, we allow the wealthy to break our laws with impunity," Yellen said in the text of remarks she's scheduled to deliver Thursday. "If we want free institutions to thrive the world over, then first, we must model what they look like at home."

Talk is cheap.

Some idle, greedy, corporate "heiress", living in Tuscany, financed most of the 1/6 insurrection, I hear.

Take all her goddamn money. Then we'll talk.

Politicians here make noises and take symbolic gestures, and then mostly leave money launderers alone. Why? Because they shoot back. So the politicians here rail against the use of “big” banknotes (€500) and people who trade in gold. But they don’t touch crypto currency or video game parlors, taxi companies or pizzerias with no customers or passengers, and yet bring half a million euros a week to deposit in small inconspicuous bills, fully declared, to their bank because “business is great.”

A friend of ours used to be with the BKA, the German version of out FBI, and he always marveled at the politicians closing their eyes to the real money launderers, and who order the harassing of others to distract from their inaction. Cartels here in the EU are no less reluctant to use violence on authorities that get “too close” than their counterparts in the western hemisphere. The politicians and cops in the EU know just as well as their counterparts in the USA whom they can harass with no blowback, and whom not touch. Take a bribe and live, or don’t and have an “accident.” It takes either guts or a strong national will to risk the latter, and usually both are in short supply.
