Every morning, Sergio Ayala combed his daughters' hair into twin braids, dropped them off at school and headed to work.
He loved his job as a field supervisor at his brother-in-law's pest control company. But he wanted to own a business and was studying to become a barber. He hoped to start a college savings fund for his three girls and toddler son.
In January, that dream was cut short. His family believes he contracted the coronavirus while practicing his barbering skills in people's homes.
Ayala died from COVID-19 at age 37.

In California, younger Latinos are dying of COVID-19 at much higher rates than their white and Asian counterparts. Younger Black people also are dying at high rates, but the disparity is starkest for Latinos.

In California, Latinos ages 20 to 54 have died from COVID-19 at a rate more than eight times higher than white people in the same age group, according to a study by USC's Department of Preventive Medicine.

Currently my MIL is dying. Normally, there would be about 50 people there. Covid is keeping the visitors down to three.
When my mom died from aneurysm, there were 20 people in the room...all of them were my in-laws...all praying over her.
My dad was still alive and made his wishes known. He did not want a bunch of people surrounding him as he was dying.
I live in Corpus Christi. Less than 30% of the population is White, Non-Hispanic. Two of my children have Hispanic spouses and three of my five grandchildren are bi-ethnic. I love it here, particularly the much broader definition of "family" here. In-laws and their families are invited on holidays and welcomed as relatives. One of my children once joked that Hispanic families considered first cousins as immediate family. She said, "You haven't really experienced New Year's Eve until you've fallen asleep in your FIL's recliner, when there's 75 people in the house."

(25,437 posts)I've been married for 36 years and have three grown kids. It's not unusual for me to take my own car, so I can leave family events "early".

(19,565 posts)The attempt to mitigate it by wearing masks in public is also a thing. At least in my social groups.
What breaks my heart is the ones who still are vaccine hesitant. Many I know are masking in public because they won't be vaccinated.

(7,862 posts)Hard to believe that the vaccine programs were just starting 12 months ago.

(53,038 posts)that approximately half of Hispanics are now Republicans.
Though, I can imagine for the undocumented and even documented immigrants getting a vaccine can be disconcerting due to concerns about immigration control.

(25,437 posts)Things such as family gatherings persisted even when they were banned. The family gatherings also tend to be larger and last longer. Mask compliance is not the best in those situations either.
My daughter had a large wedding in August 2020. I put myself in quarantine afterward. Their reception was the first held at the venue since Covid restrictions.

(89,258 posts)was they were worried that Biden would put strict lock downs and other measures in place to deal with covid.
I was thinking it was mostly about them wanting to keep jobs but maybe what you mention could be one reason also. People don't want restrictions on their family gatherings.

(53,801 posts)Sounds like disinformation to me as Latinos voted for Biden at around seventy percent.

(14,016 posts)yesterday that suggested half of Latinos would support Trump in 2024. I find it hard to believe. I definitely know its not true of Hispanics in New Mexico, which is where I live.

They are getting data from and infiltrating Democrats.
The Mayor of McAllen, TX is the former Republican Party Chair.
Also a Hispanic District flipped to Republican on Nov 2nd this tear. The flop house was a big factor.
