(86,802 posts)Like Greensburg, KS did after their F5 years ago. The video I saw elsewhere on DU was of the Amazon facility and that was far worse than downtown. I saw Greensburg three days after the fact and there was nothing like the Amazon place, that is phenomenally devastating just to look at in spot lights. The daylight images are going to be awful.

(34,124 posts)and was astonished by those pictures.
We had an F5, now called because it was before the Fujita scale, when I was 12 in Topeka. It looked just like this and it took years to make it all better. I started college when there were still classes in trailers since it went through the campus from one end to the other.
I feel for these people. What a mess. So much loss. I fear the death count.

(1,568 posts)It reminded me of Greensburg. That was so devastating for the town and SC Kansas.

(86,802 posts)As part of a relief crew. It was a really creepy vibe and nasty thunderstorms kept passing through at night. I was sleeping in a trailer and it did a lot of wiggling in the wind while I tried to sleep.
We were stationed at a park where they were also holding memorial services and the Humane Society animal emergency shelter was right there too. I would go talk to the animals after my shift. The workers were too busy to give them attention while the animals were in shock.
It was a sad scene all around.

(20,631 posts)of devastation this community has experienced, my mind went back to the Xenia, OH tornado. Was only 10 at the time, but it was clearly incredible in its scope of destruction.

(17,989 posts)I also remember the one that hit Wheelersburg where I grew up. My Dad lived there. Lost. Several friends in that one.
We had one 2 years ago that took a 20 mile path. Half a mile from me.

(86,802 posts)Probably many were hurt and killed. I was watching one of the weather channels while the tornado hit, I heard about the Amazon facility and I had to turn it off, better not to see the damage before trying to sleep. I house/dog sitting and I have a teevee to watch so I decided to keep an eye on the situation. Both TWC and Accuweather had specials on covering the events and issuing warnings.

(16,858 posts)"I know how that feels." It's got to be the same as we felt around here when we rode around checking things out after Katrina. It's such a punch in the gut. I hope people are generous to the town of Mayfield. I'm sure they will be; America is a generous country, for the most part.

The destruction is absolute.
KY governor was quoted as saying as many as 50 died.
Very sad.

(9,291 posts)of the court house, with the top roof ripped off. I knew those poor people didnt have a chance. The candle factory, just regular people trying to make extra money for the holidays. Heartbreaking, by the grace of God, go I. My son in law works the night shift at a factory,

(10,842 posts)Last I read the death toll in KY was 70 with the number surely rising as crews survey the widespread damage. I checked the tornadoes' path in TN where we formerly lived. Looks as if the area west & south of Knoxville was hit (in the Cookeville & Chattanooga areas. I've been getting severe storm warnings in Knoxville (still have my weather alerts on for the region).
Nasty and deadly!
