to work after they started evacuating the building. I figure whoever did that died and that might be why I never heard anything else about it.

...aren't highly talented. They're really not at the level of the truly excellent executives, talent-wise.
Some are just good at gladhanding & schmoozing.
So, managers below them get promoted for having the same attributes.
Then, lower level get promoted to supervisor or entry tier manager because THEY have those attributes.
I'm sure you've seen it. I sure have!

My husband worked at a company where an underling started smoking so he could go hang out with the boss on breaks.

And the guy was promoted.

For a while.

Then, because he was a useless asshole, he was fired.

Imagine that!

They might have promoted him again to get him to a different department!
I have to say that I only questioned the talents of a few executives in the 35 or so years when I was directly exposed to VPs & chief officers. Most were good in their niche, some were outstanding.
The director level, however, was a different matter. And I had lots of contact with that level because for my last 18 years I was at director level. In my direct experience, way more Peter Principle at that level than at the next couple levels up.

Republicans seem to be exempt from any criminal responsibility. Plus they’ll declare bankruptcy. It will all be pretty sordid but I doubt anyone is going to jail.

Or I’m just too damn cynical.

MAYFIELD, Ky. — As a catastrophic tornado approached this city Friday, employees of a candle factory — which would be destroyed — heard the warning sirens and wanted to leave the building. But at least four workers said supervisors warned employees that they would be fired if they left their shifts early.

For hours, as word of the coming storm spread, as many as 15 workers beseeched managers to let them take shelter at their own homes, only to have their requests rebuffed, the workers said.

Fearing for their safety, some left during their shifts regardless of the repercussions.

At least eight people died in the Mayfield Consumer Products factory, which makes scented candles. The facility was leveled, and all that is left is rubble. Photos and videos of its widespread mangled remains have become symbols of the enormous destructive power of Friday’s tornado system.

It's an appalling story. This might vary state to state, but in some cases if you leave work without permission they can fire you for job abandonment, and that means no benefits.

And that would just be for starters. Unfortunately that does not raise the dead, heal the impacted friends and family or provide all that much comfort for the injured. And the corporations just write the multi $ millions off as an "operational expense".
